There was quite a horrific highrige fire in Toronto last night. It took all afternoon and evening and the better part of the night to put out. Some secondary fires were caused by burning debris falling from the balconies of units above onto the balconies of units below. At least 1700 people are homeless while the entire building is inspected for structural damage, because the fire blazed so hot for so long. The whole thing was visible from where I live, several blocks away.

So I walk out onto my balcony a couple of hours ago, to enjoy what's left of the good weather with my after lunch espresso, and I see not one, not two, but three cigarette butts of three different brands littering my balcony. Meaning that there were at least three jackasses smoking on one or more of the floors above who decided it would be a good thing to dispose of their cigarette butts over the side without stubbing them out. Now, I don't have anything particularly inflammable on my balcony (aside from the metal patio table and chairs I use to sit out there, just a couple of pots for a bit of an herb garden, but it amazes me that, while watching this inferno blazing within clear sight last night, these idiots decided it would be a smart thing to toss away lit cigarettes into the wind (because it was blowing back towards that side of the building last night, quite fiercely) and not imagine that these burning embers might have landed on someone's balcony and caused who knows what sort of conflagration.

I taped a notice at the elevators on each of the floors above me, telling them to throw themselves over the next time, and do the world a favour.

A bazillon years ago I lived in Vancouver BC.

On one dry (I know, but it happens in Vancouver) day my friends asked us if we wanted to join them on a short trip heading east.

Along the way the driver threw her still lit cigarette out of her window.

She wasn’t a stupid person, but she clearly failed to appreciate the potential impact her habit and her act had.



Forgive for making the comparison, but people who do things like that are in a category of those who think they can drive when they are stinking drunk.

The only difference is that stinking drunk drivers are more often caught.
