One of them anyway.

I'm on-call for jury duty for two weeks in Federal Court in San Jose. Yesssss!

I get paid for not going to work. I get to do something different for a nice change of pace. And if I'm lucky and get selected I get to meet a group of new people.

I have been impressed by the seriousness and care with which people approach this job. It really is very inspiring.

Another favorite thing is ordering shoes online. I have to hand it to the people at sports direct in England, they're 2 for 2, twice I've ordered shoes on Sunday and got them at my door here in civilization by Thursday when I got home.

On a Friday? That's odd. Let us know what the jury selection process is like -- who does the questioning, judge or lawyers? What questions do they ask to elicit opinions and on what subjects? Do they use a written questionnaire or is it all verbal? What kind of case is it? (I don't want you to discuss any details of the case -- which, if you're selected, the judge will tell you you can't do anyway -- just the procedures used for selection.)

I thought a Friday was odd too.

In most ways it was similar to prior jury selections.

The judge questioned people on their availability and gave some general questions about their suitability as jurors. A few were excused at that point for reasonable cause of one sort or another, personal business crisis, admitted strong bias, &c.

Each side then questioned the jurors. Some questions were asked to the group and some were specific to particular people based on their juror questionnaires. About 24 people were left in the pool at this point.

At this point it differed from prior juries.

Both sides then conferred and agreed on 12 jurors and 2 alternate candidates. These were presented to the judge who accepted them. The rest were dismissed. Two more alternate candidates were then added and questioned (including myself) and between those 4 both sides agreed on 2 alternates (not including myself, probably a good thing considering what we have to do at work but I am sorry not to serve just the same).

It went from 9 am to 3pm.

Back in the day I testified in federal court on drug cases and I was very favorably impressed. I am still impressed. There is great care and seriousness to the whole process and on the whole I am encouraged. Our system of justice is something we do better than most things.

Ok one of my other favorite things is getting patents granted and I had one last January. The work which led to it I am very proud of, it is creative and different and works very well. What emerged from the patent process is a somewhat different thing and I"m less excited about it. But something is better than nothing, so I'm told, so I should be happy about this. And I am just as happy as $1,000 and a free dinner (open bar) will make me. So there you go.

Zappos is a very good place to buy shoes online.

If they have those shoes that LJ found for rubato, they would probably throw in a nose for free.

Another of my favorite things in my chainsaw; which I got to use yesterday taking out a buddlea and an overgrown palm tree. It's just a small electric saw but it makes quick work.
