wes - be careful now. Adolescence in bull elephants is between 9 and 18 years of age and in that period they wander away from the mothers most of the time and start hanging out with other bulls, learning stuff. The older bulls in the group teach lessons in social standing. They will move out of the herd permanently some 2-4 years later and travel in bull groups. They get more lessons then.

you are correct, I still think they learn their manners from mommy, but I ve been wrong before....

I was saying that a group which consists of exclusively young males needs the influence of older males to improve their behavior. This group was entirely of young males. Did that fact escape your notice?
