Cops ‘left woman in rapist’s lair’

POLICE officers repeatedly failed to arrest a convicted rapist, despite his victim’s extraordinary efforts to help them track him down.

The woman, a teacher in her 40s, went so far as to arrange a meeting with the man. The police did not turn up to arrest him as arranged and she was left with no choice but to have sex with him.

He had previously raped her nine times during a three-hour ordeal.

The Pietermaritzburg High Court last week dismissed an appeal by the rapist, Makethe Abraham Nkwanyane, against his conviction and sentence on rape and robbery charges. The court instead increased his 15-year sentence for rape to life behind bars.

Ah, oldr? That's kind of not a 'wow'... Not at all.

Granted we don't have the entire story, but those cops sound incredibly stupid. I'd be interested to see how they ultimately arrested him.

No offense, Meade, but South Africa sounds like a truly terrible place to be a woman. :(

I didn't mean wow as in a good sense.

Yes, master!

The next day, the woman gave the police the address and they promised to arrest Nkwanyane — but again failed to do so. Only after the principal of her school and an employee assistance programme worker intervened was Nkwanyane arrested. Judge Pillay said: “This case is as much an indictment of [Nkwanyane] as it is against the police for remaining unresponsive. It is a double travesty of justice.”

Pillay said the police ought to be investigated. KwaZulu-Natal police yesterday said they were still tracing the case files.

(I think the judge meant that the case is as much an indictment of the police as is it is of the offender - we certainly get his point)
