Re: The man who will be king
Actually, does anyone have a say or is the succession set by law? I presume Charles could not accept the crown when QE2 dies, and I know Parliament has some say (but I don't know if it is dispositive). Do any of our UK colleagues know?

Re: The man who will be king
I don't know why Charles couldn't "accept" the crown when Brenda kicks off. He is, regardless of sentiment, the next in the line of succession. Parliament's say is limited - but Winston managed to boot Uncle Ed anyway. If Charles were to refuse the crown, then that renunciation would require parliamentary approval in the UK and the Commonwealth or whatever the pink bits are called these days.

Re: The man who will be king
One thing I recall reading about Edward VIII is that his abdication was based on a threat to deport Simpson for bigamy should he marry her. Apparently, at the time British law only accepted divorce for adultery, and that was not why she divorced her prior husband(s). But it did appear parliament had no right to force the abdication.
Likewise, I had always assumed the crown is Charles' birthright, regardless of what anyone else thinks. Absent some sort of incapacity (perhaps of a Shakespearean type?), it's his to refuse.

Yes, and actually I think lib got his chart wrong. Prince George (the Willate child) follows William. And their pending second child - regardless of gender per the Succession Act of 2013 - will be fourth in line, thus pushing all other contenders down a further spot.
Looks as if "Oboma" doesn't stand much of a chance - either one of 'em.

Willate? A contraction of William and Kate? Is that a term really used?

to the extent that anyone viewed my comment as an endorsement of any sort of the use of that term, I hereby withdraw it.
Re: The man who will be king
My memory has never been great and is probably not as good now as it has been, but I remember British expressions of hostility towards Charles and Camilla that border on anarchy, in my opinion. In your opinion does not much hostility exist for Charles and his wife and if it does could it destroy the British monarchy if Charles, a king not respected, is forced on them?

Re: The man who will be king
Don't think so - could be wrong. Camilla has largely overcome that hostility as the Diana-worshippers have died off or come to their senses. She suffered much from being thought "ugly" compared to the Weeping Beauty but it turned out that she was a rather nice person and even managed to get Charles to appear sympathetic. Somewhat. Monarchs are not "forced" on anyone - it assumes someone else is doing the forcing which is not the case. Undoubtedly there's a preference for the Diana-sprog vs. Dad.

Re: The man who will be king
Oh well this sounds really reliable.....
Read more at http://www.inquisitr.com/1574911/camill ... HvUt0qx.99According to the report in November 10 issue of The Globe, Camilla Parker-Bowles, who has allegedly been scheming for years to get her husband Prince Charles onto the British throne as quickly as possible — presumably allowing her to assume the title of Queen Consort — has won a major battle in her behind-the-scenes war with her stepson, Prince William, and stepdaughter in-law, Kate Middleton.
Camilla has “really upped the ante” in her machinations against William and Kate, according to the rumor site Celebrity Dirty Laundry, which summarized the offline-only Globe report.

Re: The man who will be king
"The Bowles Woman" is how The Queen reportedly used to refer to Camilla...Who ever that is:
Works for me; I don't have a lot of respect for that gold digging home wrecker...
Nor do I have much for Chuck Windsor either...
My low opinion of him began when he published his whiny self-pitting autobiography that should have been titled, "Pity Me, I'm The Prince Of Wales"...
And it was further forged when a tape came to light of him talking on the phone with The Bowles Woman (while still married to Princess Di, who he humiliated with his blatant philandering) during which he said, "I wish I was a tampon so I could spend all of my time in your knickers"...
I think Chuck is basically a not terribly bright, shallow man of very weak character, much like his late unlamented great uncle...
If I had my druthers when Her Majesty leaves the scene, he would pass on taking The Crown in favor of William...
But I suspect he won't do that...
Like Edward VII, he will assume The Throne late in life and spend a few undistinguished years on it....

Undistinguished? What does royalty do that is distinguished? Yes, the pageantry and tourist attraction is a part, but it's a bit like playing Mickey Mouse at Disneyland (or Miss America). Oh they can sometimes support charities and a few causes, but I don't see much else.
I guess there are some who care; but personally I couldn't care less who is the monarch.

Good job too. You're a USian and the UK couldn't care less that you couldn't care less.

Re: The man who will be king
I'm sure most in the UK don't care what any in the US think of their monarchy and the group of inbreds who claim to have superior (royal) blood and a god given right to rule. I personally find it curious that some would cling to those quaint notions and retain the vestiges of monarchy without much power, but they can run their country as they see fit.
Re: The man who will be king
At one time I actually had a fairly positive attitude towards Chuck...
Particularly when it came out that he had wanted to name William "Louis" after his uncle Lord Louis Mountbatten, who apparently Chuck had a very close relationship with...(He was talked out of doing it...another example of his weakness...because of the association of the name "Louis" with French kings....)
I have enormous respect for Lord Mountbatten; a towering historical figure. I figured that a fellow who saw him as a role model couldn't be all bad....
But the evidence suggests he has a lot more in common with his great uncle Edward VIII, (absent the dashing good looks of course) than with Lord Mountbatten...
Chuck's never committed treason like his great uncle did, but then he was never called upon by his paramour to do so....
I strongly suspect that had Camilla wanted him to, Chuck would have committed treason in a heartbeat...
Again, like his great uncle, not a bad man or an evil man...
Just a man who (in the immortal words of Mrs. Slocum) is "weak as water"....

Re: The man who will be king
If they MUST maintain a monarchy, I'm all for Wills taking the throne. He actually works for a living, risking his life to save others. His mum taught him to truly care about commoners, so much so that he actually married one (albeit a privileged one). Charles' behavior in his marriage to Diana undermined his character incontrovertibly, IMHO.
