Slip up.

Post by Gob »

A man who deliberately "slipped" on a wet bag in a supermarket so he could make a £10,000 insurance claim has been given a suspended jail term.

Waheed Iqbal, 36, claimed he "banged his head and body" in a Lidl store in Bradford.

CCTV footage showed Iqbal gradually easing himself to the floor before flagging down a fellow shopper.

Iqbal, of Hollings Road, Bradford, also claimed he had been knocked out by the buckle of a punchbag at a gym.

He was found guilty of two counts of fraud by false representation, at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates' Court.

At Bradford Crown Court he was given a 10-month jail sentence, suspended for two years.

Iqbal was wheeled out of the Lidl store to an ambulance but an insurance fraud investigation team later found he asked the paramedics to stop before they reached a hospital casualty department.

He got out of the vehicle unaided and went straight back to the store to speak to the manager about recording the incident.

Police also found that Iqbal had staged another "accident" with a punchbag in a gym so he could make a personal injury insurance claim totalling £3,800.

In May 2012 he told Nuffield Health's insurer that he had been knocked out by buckles on the punchbag at its Shipley branch, leaving him with a permanent scar on his nose and flashbacks rendering him unable to set foot in a gym.

Det Ch Insp Dave Wood, head of City of London Police's insurance fraud enforcement department, said: "To add insult to his bogus injury claims, Iqbal also thought nothing of wasting the emergency and health services' time in a bid to get medical records to bolster his claims."
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”
