Go Giants!

Post by Lord Jim »

What an incredible playoff series....

Especially Game Three....

Of the eight regular starters in the Giants line up, only one was a starter on opening day....

For a team that has been that unsettled in the starting lineup to make it this far is phenomenal; probably unprecedented....

QUAKE WITH FEAR PHILLIES!

You're goin' down!!!! :nana

Think on these things:

And weep.

Isn't it cheating for a state side to have to face a team of giants?

Ps. is this the strange "armour plated men bumping into each other" game, or the one like cricket but without the skill or perseverance? ;)

Now to important news...
A message on the scoreboard said it all.

"India stays No.1. Australia goes to No.5". Below the Poms. At the critical time, Young India stood up to be counted, and old Australia floundered. A confident partnership between two novices called into the team as replacements for established players put India on the road to victory on a disappointingly one-sided final day.

It's the one like cricket, but with less coma inducing tedium....

"Cricket" is the answer to the trivia question, "If Leonard Cohen was a sport, which sport would he be?"..... :P

That would be American Football.

Nah, it's the game cricket is like (or, more approriately, wants to be like), except that the pitcher has enough skill to keep the ball aloft the distance it travels between the pitcher's mound and the batter--no namby pamby rolling the ball along the ground.

Rolling the ball along the ground? Like this you mean BigRR?

I know. I know. Cricket.

edited to add: you know, a juvenile version of something a real man can do. Leonard Cohen is more likr rugby, something entirely tis own that one can like or dislike.

As for the photo Gob--not only is the ball rolled, but the guys cry if it brushes against them. Justin Bieber all the way.

Well, there's two things we agree on in just one sentence alone! Should we start singing kum-ba-ya now?

LOL :D

edited to add; Luckily we'll never find out what would happen to a baseball player should he encounter the ball, they're much to delicate to be considered targets. It also saves the baseball bowler from having to learn to make the the ball go faster by taking a run up. :)

Nah, they get hit all the time; and when the ball goes 80+ mph it hurts a lot more than a rolled ball. As for a run up--it's not needed; pitchers choose to develop their arm muscles.

80 mph? Chapman's been consistently throwing over 100 mph, reaching 105 the other night against Carlos Ruiz. Here he is against San Diego:

that's why I said 80+; 100+ mph is becoming more and more common.

As I recall, they don't measure the speed of the bowled cricket ball by radar or stopwatch, they use a calendar.

Fast bowlers often go 100 mph +, and of course, a cricket ball is a hard object as opposed to the spongeball used in baseball. :P

Nah, mate, fastest cricket bowl ever clocked was 161 km/h (100 mph), and that was a rarity. The best fast bowlers usually clock in at around 140 km/h (87 mph) -- comparable to a decent (but not great) fastball in baseball.

As for "hard object," well, there's a reason they call it "hardball."

Joking and mickey taking aside; there is a very interesting article (which Andy H put me onto) here at wiki; Comparison of cricket and baseball

And of course both games have their virtues and are worthy of respect.

Actually neither mate. It's the one like rounders... you know, the game that is played by schoolgirls in the UK...

Sorry LordJim, as much as I hate the Phillies (I'm a long suffering Met fan) I don't think the Giants have much of a chance.
Would be nice if they did beat the Phillies though.
