http://www.freep.com/story/news/local/m ... /22732717/Metro Detroit digs out from area's 3rd-biggest snowstorm
The third-biggest snowstorm in metro Detroit's recorded history has plows humming among tall snow piles on roadways across southeastern Michigan this morning.
Most metro-area schools and colleges are closed, including Wayne State University, University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University.
By 9 a.m., the storm had cleared, leaving blue skies with bitter cold. Temperatures have already peaked at about 18 degrees and are to stick in the mid-teens this morning, said meteorologist Cory Behnke with the National Weather Service.
With 16.7 inches of snow since the storm arrived early Sunday, it's the most to fall since Dec. 1 and 2 in 1974, when 19.3 inches fell, as recorded at Detroit Metro Airport. The snowiest was April 6, 1886, when 24.5 inches were reported, Behnke said. The records date to 1880.
Plow trucks have been working 12- and 16-hour shifts on area highways since Sunday morning, said Diane Cross with Michigan Department of Transportation. Drifting snow is complicating their work, but she said this morning's lower-than-normal traffic volumes have made it easier to catch up.
"We're doing the best we can to stay on top of it," she said, adding that drivers are advised to leave space around the plow trucks and other motorists as well as clean snow off their cars to make themselves more visible. "We've had a number of spin-outs since yesterday."

About 2 hours south of there we got nearly nothing-maybe an inch. It's cold as a well digger's tit though.

Chicago took a big hit:
http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2015/02/02/ ... s-of-snow/“Historic” Blizzard Buries Chicago Area In More Than 19 Inches Of Snow
CHICAGO (CBS) – After nearly 36 straight hours of snowfall, the Chicago area was digging out from more than 19 inches of snow across the region, making it the 5th largest snowstorm in the city’s history, and the snow was still falling early Monday.
As of 6 a.m., a total of 19.3 inches had fallen at O’Hare International Airport since the snowstorm began around 7:30 p.m. Saturday. At Midway International Airport, 19.2 inches had fallen as of 6 a.m. Monday.
In other parts of the Chicago area, 18 inches had fallen in Lincolnwood, 17 inches had fallen in Somonauk, 13.5 inches had fallen in Schererville, 15.2 inches had fallen in Portage, 17 inches had fallen in Libertyville, and 14 inches had fallen in Naperville.
“This is a historic snowfall,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Sunday night. “In a 24-hour period, it’s going to be one of the top three in the history of the city of Chicago.”
The national weather service said, with the 19.3 inches of snow measured at O’Hare, the snowstorm was already the 5th largest in Chicago history, and snow was still falling in the city when the latest measurement was taken at O’Hare. While the blizzard itself had left the Chicago area and shifted to the East Coast by early Monday morning, lake effect snow falling for several hours Monday morning in northeastern Illinois and northwestern Indiana. By about 7:40 a.m., the lake effect snow had shifted mostly to northwest Indiana.
he heavy snow prompted the Chicago Public Schools and most other school districts in the area to cancel classes on Monday, as roads were treacherous, and in the city, plows had yet to clear most side streets by the time students would have gone to school.
The city’s plows spent more than 36 hours focusing on main streets and Lake Shore Drive after the storm started. City officials said snow removal vehicles began clearing side streets around 8:30 a.m. Monday.
The full fleet of 500 pieces of snow removal equipment included 350 plows and salt spreaders, and 150 pieces of heavy equipment that will be used to remove snow piles, and keep snow cleared from areas near hospitals, firehouses, police stations, and schools.
The blizzard also was grounding thousands of flights at the city’s two airports.
On Sunday, airlines canceled more than 1,300 flights at O’Hare, and more than 300 flights at Midway, according to the city’s Aviation Department. As of 8:30 a.m. Monday, airlines had canceled more than 785 additional flights at O’Hare, and more than 90 others at Midway.

Ah! Can we expect a PAT riot?
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

Once again, stay safe Guin. And Crackpot.
This is the typical LI storm I know and love. Snow, rain, sleet and hail all at once. Slush on the roads. Coating of ice on the car. Slippery driveway. Heavy snowice on the branches and power lines.
Yup, a Longuyland storm.

Re: Hey CP, Did You Get Your Snow Day?
I spent all day yesterday (Sunday) driving a computer part from Chicago to Cincinnati (apparently the tech really really needed this part right away and he--rightly--expected it would not get there if sent by air) and then driving back home. On the way down it snowed as far as Indianapolis before it turned to rain; on the way back I got as far as Lafayette before the rain turned back to snow. I left our warehouse in Elk Grove Village (northwest of the city, near O'Hare) at 6AM, made the delivery around 1PM (CST, 2PM EST), and by the time I got back to Chicago at around 9PM things were so bad that I spent an hour and a half circling my neighborhood and getting stuck 3 or 4 times before I finally found a parking space on a nearby street I could shovel clear and park in.

Boston topped 35 inches in the last week as of 1pm today -- thats an all time record and it's still snowing 5 hours later. Parade pushed to Wednesday, thank goodness. Where is all the snow going to go?

I suppose this would be the wrong time to mention that we hit 68 degrees here today?...

Hey Econo, it hasn't been all beer and skittles out here this January...
There have been days it's barely gotten out of the low 60s....
And at night, it's plunged into the low 40s...
A couple of times even the upper 30s...
It's been so cold, that a few times when I've gone out in the yard in the early morning, I've been able to see my breath...
We've had to run the heat for a few hours at least a dozen times over the past month...
So don't act like you're the only one who's suffering...

It's down to 65 degrees here right now. If this continues, I might need to put on a shirt to keep warm.
Re: Hey CP, Did You Get Your Snow Day?
Strictly speaking no but I didn go to work since my Escape got stuck in the driveway (damn plows). spent most of the day clearing the drive. Got the truck out just after noon. At 6 the plows came by again after which I dug out the end of the drive (again) and cleared access to my mailbox.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

Re: Hey CP, Did You Get Your Snow Day?
Had to actually shovel the driveway last night when I got home. Other than pushing the snow off the back stoop to a spot where I could push it away with the tractor, I haven't physically shoveled in years. Damn that's hard work.
Good thing the snowblower should be here thursday.
Of course we won't get any more snow once it gets here.
On the plus side, I may be going snowmobiling this weekend.
