Robins!

Post by Guinevere »

My swede sent me a photo of robins in the tree outside his house this morning. It was better than a dozen roses.

My god - spring may be coming after all!!

Or maybe those robins are from the shallow end of the gene pool.; perhaps their Springdar is malfunctioning... 8-)

Perhaps. After a gorgeous sunny morning it's snowing again.

GIUN. MORE BOSTON SNOW?

Post by RayThom »

Great. I know you're busy -- bless your little heart -- so It will give me something to do. I'll be posting more Hull "snotos" as soon as I find them. Rest assured, I got your back.

Personally I think Guin has posted some beautiful photographic work Ray...

That comment seems like a somewhat gratuitous slam to me... :?

Haven't seen robins yet. But I was snowmobiling with my daughter along the upper Delaware river sunday and spotted a mature bald eagle and two younger bald eagles.

I'm just a helpful, nice guy. Guin and sparrowgrass always liked to jab me when they had an opportunity. This is how I can give back to the community. She understands.

I guess I was the one who didn't understand - I thought "snotos" was just a witty play on "sno w pho tos"... Ray had posted a couple of pictures of Hull with ice and snow.

Male goldfinches are in their all-too-brief mating plumage:

Image

Hummingbirds have started nesting already and we're waiting to see if any rufous hummingbirds nest locally. Most of them head north but a few have been spotted in the arboretum nearby in the summer. I'd like to see them get established locally. The males are real dazzlers.:

Image

I've heard peregrins in the area but not often enough to think they're nesting nearby. Some years we'll see, and hear, them daily until June-ish. I think its too early to know judging from the SJ falcon cam which shows a female on the nest but no other info about a male or pairbonding activity. In 2013 the first egg appeared on Feb 19th so something should happen soon:

What a thrill to have a hummer on the finger! I wonder how that photo came about.

I've had chickadees land on my hand before (after standing very still with seed in my palm) and I've held finches who crashed into the window as they recovered from the bell-ringing - but a hummer! Wow!

I did see some beautiful, bright blue birds in the yard the other day. they weren t blue birds, they weren t blue jays. they were a beautiful , almost old Ford blue color.

they had white on their breast and a bit of tan on their nether regions in front

Friggin robins, hardly - harbingers of spring!!!!!! (there is a significant climactic difference between Delmarva and Maine - we don't see them year round). It's March on Sunday. Thank. God. This has been the longest February ever. (And I get to shovel again later this morning, woo hoo).

How blue, Wes? Soft blue or more iridescent? Possibly a tufted titmouse - one of my faves.

Or, go to http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/search and see if you can find your feathered friend. Download the bird ID app - it's very useful for basic ID!

big sky has the right bird. I must have gotten the breast and nether regions confused, as to color.
