GRRRRR! Computer scammers!

I was just on the interwebs when my computer went a little nuts (loud alarm sounds) and froze up with a warning message that my browser and/or PC was critically infected and gave a message to immediately call customer support or face 'hard drive failure'.
The message used my internet provider's name (CenturyLink) and the Norton name/logo, so I thought it first it might be legit - also I've never seen this happen or heard of it before.
Apparently it's a scam to get you to pay for customer support you don't need. The # is toll free, but they charge you for their 'help' if you are gullible enough to fall for it . . . which many not-tech-savvy computer users would be, especially older folks.
I hate fucking scammers of all kinds in all shapes and forms. It's a shit way to make a 'living', taking advantage of other people.

eta: I figured out there was nothing wrong with my browser, network, PC, etc. by running all the scans on my Avast Premier program.
