A great white shark that became stranded on a Cape Cod beach now swims free thanks to beachgoers who kept the shark wet until rescuers arrived.
The shark, a 7-foot male juvenile, beached itself in the South Beach area of Chatham, Massachusetts on Monday. He was allegedly trying to catch seagulls on the sandbar, according to a witness who recorded the rescue. The shark became stranded as the tide went out, according to an Associated Press report.
Video shows beachgoers keeping the shark wet until rescuers arrived. The shark is splashed with buckets of water as it writhes in the sand.
Officials arriving on the scene tied a line to the sharkâs rear fin and slowly towed the shark back out to sea.
Harbormaster Stuart Smith tells the Associated Press that nearly 40 people were crowded around the shark when he arrived and it appeared dead. However, officials say the shark was tagged and released back in the water.

A VIDEO has begun doing the rounds online showing the moment an animal lover carried a stranded shark out to sea.
The unknown male was seen scooping up the baby fish into his arms in St Ives and dropping it back gently into the ocean.
Passer-by Grace Brown, 19, was among a group of shocked witnesses who saw the unnamed hero wade out to rescue the stricken shark.
The 3ft creature was trapped in the harbour at St Ives when the tide went out on Monday.
Despite trying to get officials to help, by-standers were told there was nothing that could be done.
But stunned on-lookers watched in amazement as the member of the public emerged from the crowd and put his personal safety aside to rescue the baby man-eater.
In the video the shark can be seen swimming around the ever decreasing waters, cut off from the open waters outside the harbour wall.
Just before the water levels became too low for the creature the rescuer is recorded wading in before hauling it up into his arms and carrying it to safety.
Grace, a student from Sheffield, said: "I was on holiday with my family, staying in a flat in the harbour, and had seen the shark swimming around earlier on in the day.
