Murder charges filed in slaying of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee

A South Side man has been charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee, who was lured into an alley and gunned down just doors from his home.

Corey Morgan, 27, of the 7800 block of South Hoyne Avenue, is expected to appear for a bond hearing Friday afternoon at the Leighton Criminal Court Building, according to Cook County state’s attorney spokeswoman Sally Daly.

Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, who has called the killing “probably the most abhorrent, cowardly, unfathomable crime” [Amen]he had seen in his 35-year career, will hold a news conference about the charges at 10 a.m. Friday at Area South police headquarters, 727 E. 111th St.

Police say Tyshawn was lured into an alley in the 8000 block of South Damen Avenue on Nov. 2 and killed because of his father’s gang ties. He was shot several times, including a fatal shot to the side of the head.

Police had questioned Morgan two days after Tyshawn’s killing but released him. Two weeks later, Morgan was arrested again and charged with a weapons violation apparently unrelated to Tyshawn's killing.

He was ordered held on $1 million bail and was later released after posting the required bond.

Law enforcement sources have said Tyshawn may be the latest victim of a violent gang feud.

Morgan's brother, Tracey Morgan was fatally shot Oct. 13 after leaving a "gang call-in" meeting, an anti-violence effort by Chicago police and other law enforcement.[ Yeah, how's that workin' out?]

Their mother, who was also in the car, was wounded by the gunfire. Police have been investigating whether Morgan, a reputed member of the Terror Dome faction of the Black P Stones, was followed by a rival gang member who also attended the meeting in a Chatham church.

Five days later, a member of the rival Killa Ward faction of the Gangster Disciples was wounded in a shooting near 78th and Honore streets in Gresham that also left 19-year-old Brianna Jenkins dead, according to police.

Like his brother Tracey, Corey Morgan is a reputed member of the Terror Dome faction of the Black P Stones, according to police.

The Tribune was the first to interview Tyshawn's father, Pierre Stokes, after his son was killed. The day after the slaying, he denied to the newspaper that anyone would have a motive to kill him.

But if someone did, there was no reason to take it out on his son because Stokes said he was out in the neighborhood all the time. If anyone wanted to harm him, he or she could find the opportunity, he said.

I'm not hard to find," Stokes said.

During his interview with the Tribune, Stokes did not talk specifically about whether he was a gang member but said he disagreed with what police have said about him. He also expressed frustration with police, saying investigators seemed more interested in him than in finding who fatally shot Tyshawn.

"They're more worried about me. Why are you worried about me, not the killer?" Stokes, 25, said earlier this month outside his residence in the Auburn-Gresham. "I'm not the killer. Worry about the killer."

But Stokes said he felt guilty that he was not at his son's side when he walked to his grandmother's house on the afternoon he was killed.

"To be honest, I feel bad," he said. "I feel like it's my fault." [Yeah, in retrospect, maybe joining a group called "the Terror Dome faction" wasn't the best possible life choice... ]

Tyshawn was a fourth-grader at Joplin Elementary School and loved to play basketball. A basketball he always carried with him was found near where he was shot.

The autopsy report showed the bullets struck the 9-year-old in his thumb and hand and grazed his back. But the fatal shot hit him on the right side of his head.

I just watched a press conference held by the Chicago cops; apparently two more savages are being sought for this...

This was not a case of a child being inadvertently caught by a stray bullet in a gang violence incident (terrible as that is) this was the cold blooded execution of an innocent little boy. What sort of sub-human scum does such a thing? :shrug

It sickens me to be in the same species with such a creature...

Sadly, Illinois is not a death penalty state so these animals will never get the justice they truly deserve. If it were up to me, instead of prosecuting this dirt bag, I'd release him at 2 in the morning in front of the "Terror Dome" gang headquarters...

I suspect they'd take good care of him...

Because black on black is so routine that it does not feel so photo-op friendly?

Of course there was a black community outcry over the Amanda Blackburn murder here in Indy. But most of it was an outcry over a white woman being murdered and getting a bunch of attention. :shrug

Man, I'm thinking since it appears 80% of homicides or more involve guns, cops and blacks, maybe we should ban all of them

Because the (racist) police ignored finding the killer and focussed on the victims father instead?

The police assigned a task force to this case; it was a top priority. I recall reading when it happened that initially the father was not being very cooperative in terms of providing leads of possible suspects. (You'd think a father in that situation would want to do anything humanly possible to help the police find his child's killer, bu apparently not this father. He has some kind of nerve to whine about being investigated.)

It was perfectly logical to investigate the father's gang connections and rivalries given the fact that those connections were the motive for the crime. No "racism" was required. To not have done that would have been complete dereliction of duty on the part of the police department.

Through solid determined police work, the police were able to build their case and identify the perps. They were aided ultimately by information from the community, but it took time to develop this because the people were understandably frightened of getting into trouble with the gangs. The police deserve nothing but applause and salutes for the work they did in this case.

And if they follow through with their vow to devote the resources to destroy these two gangs, they will deserve even more applause.

Remember: Don't snitch even though your son has been murdered.

The mother of a murdered 9-year-old Chicago boy has been forced to defend herself after using donations intended for her son’s burial to buy a new car.

Tyshawn Lee was lured into a South Side alleyway and gunned down last week in an attack that has been linked to a gang feud.

The boy’s mother, Karla Lee, has admitted using the money donated through GoFundMe to buy the car but insisted it was what her son would have wanted to keep her safe.
She bought a 2015 Chrysler 200 - nice car! Wonder how much went to bury her son?

Just what this story needed...

Another scumbag....

This poor little guy already had the deck stacked against him, being raised by these two Parent-Of-The-Year nominees...

What a pair...

The mother claims that since the story broke it was no longer safe for her to use public transportation. I could see that, actually is it ever safe in her neighborhood?
I also figure if you give money to people yo really can't dictate what they do with it, so I quit giving unless it's personal.

This sounds like a job for...

...A "COMMUNITY ORGANIZER"!!!!! ;) :nana

P.S. BTW, Spike Lee's new film, Chi-Raq, addresses this exact issue (though obviously not this specific case).
(Is that high-profile enough for you?)
