We're down to the final sprint in gift-buying, any hints?

Post by rubato »

Irish table linen for the spouse along with some glassware and misc. She got jewelry for her birthday just passed so I didn't want to repeat so soon.

Lots of cool socks for stocking stuffers this year for the tribe.

I've decided to give it a rest this year with music or movies (mostly Flower Films documentaries by Les Blank).

Cutlery and Leatherman tools have been done for the gentlemen; I may get a paring knife for my wife to replace one a guest broke the tip off of .

Books not yet chosen for the BIL. Perhaps Sarah Chayes book.

Your ideas?

A good Bible?

I'm holding out for a bottle of this;

I don't think rubato is buying for you. He's looking for hints on what he should be buying

I have a 10 year old single malt Laphroaig that I bought for my office 'bar'; I would send it to you, but too costly. I'm going to hang onto it and hope I run into a friend or relative who likes scotch whisky in my travels.

It's the thought that counts!!

Duty free, we brought back bottles of "Penderyn", "Caol Ila", "Cardhu" and a friend had acquired for me a bottle of "Adnams "Spirit of Broadside"".

AS Scotch is 1/4 of the price in the UK it is in Aus, I was allowed to go "up the range" somewhat. :D

I'm a novice scotch drinker - had a glass in tribute to my friend Linda when she passed, something Scottish that she brought home from her visit, drunk in Waterford crystal glasses.

If I decide to try drinking this Laphroaig, what's the best way? Neat or over ice?

A matter of taste. If it's the 10 yr old, which is one of the milder versions, and you're not a regular Scotch drinker, a little water to release the oils may be welcome.

I only ever drink good Scotch neat, no ice or water.

Go--I'll often throw a single ice cube in as I like it slightly chilled, but often drink it neat during the cooler months. The Cardhu sounds nice, but I'd try the others as well.

BSG--I agree with Gob re the water; Laphroaig can be pretty tough to stomach for some not quite used to scotch.

My mate bought me a large chunk of these for Xmas.

As they were vacuum sealed we were allowed to bring them into Aus!!

Over ice?  The distiller spends how many years trying to get the water out of the whiskey, and you want to put it back?

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

I've yet to start my Xmas shopping, but we got most of the family stuff while in Blighty.
