Kalamazoo Uber driver picked up fares between killings, source says

Kalamazoo, Michigan (CNN)The man accused of killing six people and injuring two more in a Saturday evening shooting rampage in Kalamazoo, Michigan, was an Uber driver who picked up and dropped off passengers between shootings, a source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN.

The source, who is not authorized to speak to media, said investigators believe Jason Brian Dalton was even looking for fares after the final shooting of a nearly seven-hour killing rampage.

CNN affiliate WWMT spoke to a man who says he was a passenger of Dalton's just before the shootings started.

"We got about a mile from my house, and he got a telephone call. After that call, he started driving erratically, running stop signs," Matt Mellen told the affiliate. "We were kind of driving through medians, driving through the lawn speeding along and then finally, once he came to a stop, I jumped out of the car and ran away."[I had a similar experience in a cab in NYC once...]
Mellen said he called the police: "He was surprisingly calm, I was freaking out."

The ride-sharing company confirmed to CNN that Dalton, 45, was an Uber driver and said he had passed a background check.

"We are horrified and heartbroken at the senseless violence in Kalamazoo," Uber's chief security officer Joe Sullivan said to CNN in a statement. "We have reached out to the police to help with their investigation in any way that we can."

I was wondering if anyone would post about this latest mass-shooting incident, or if this sort of thing had just become so commonplace that it was now unremarkable.

Oh, well...the shooter wasn't a Muslim or a black teenager, so I guess it's all OK... :shrug

I know that his neighbors said he was nice, but I wouldn t have gotten in a car with him.

I have known a few people who looked like him and none of them were nice. he has that ruthless no conscience type of look.

I know you can t judge a book by its cover, but....

he got some bad Levi s from an ancestor somewhere. ghengis khan maybe.....

I don't think this story would have "survived" if it weren't for the fact that they still don't have a motive. Since we can't file it away into a neat little box we can't let it go. Apparently he has admitted to being the shooter but still no motive. It just doesn't sit well.

Is seems that this guy just wanted to put a new spin on the phrase "killing time between jobs"

It's an odd hybrid kind of case...

The guy doesn't fit neatly into the profile of either "serial killer" or "spree killer"...

Serial killers kill, and then go on with their regular life routines...

Spree killers tend to go on a non-stop killing rampage...

This guy was a spree killer who was also behaving like a serial killer...

they still don't have a motive
I've got a Fringe-type sci-fi explanation for this:

Dalton had no motive, because it wasn't Dalton that made the decision for him to do this...

There is no "motive" to be found, because Dalton was just a manipulated test subject for a larger plot...

An evil doer (or evil doers) have developed a mind control nano-byte technology, that they needed to test before using it on their real targets...

So the mind control tech was administered to Brian (through a cup of coffee, a piece of candy, a pin-prick injection, etc.) and the evil doers then began their test:

"Brian get your gun, then buy a coat to conceal it with. Then forget about it and go to work"

Brian does it, but then has no memory of why and his conscious mind doesn't even think about the fact that he has done this...

Then they try another simple command:

"Brian, start driving erratically"

The first passenger jumps out, and the evil doers give their next command: "now just go back to going about your job normally"

Having succeeded in getting him to follow those instructions, they're now ready to see if they can get him to commit a homicide:

"Brian pull into that car dealership parking lot. Now take out your gun and shoot those two people standing over there"

"Now put the gun away and go back to work."

This is repeated several times, until Dalton is apprehended. He goes into custody quietly; he admits to what he has done, but has no idea why he did it...

In the meantime the nanobytes break down in his system leaving no physical trace, and the police have no choice but to conclude that this was a case of a guy with some sort of mental problem who inexplicably "snapped"...

Now the evil doers are ready to launch their real plan...

Mass murder at a gathering of world leaders, perhaps... :?

That's okay Gen'l, I wouldn't expect you to recognize a clever sci-fi/crime-drama plot line when you see one...
