Gay 'Cures' Don't Work, Says World Psychiatric Association

The World Psychiatric Association is calling "ex-gay" or "conversation" therapy "unscientific, unethical, ineffective, and harmful" in a statement released today to BuzzFeed News.
The association will release a report tomorrow that will declare its opposition "to any attempts to turn LGBT people heterosexual," in reference to the effectiveness of so-called conversion therapy.
Along with declaring the inefficacy of such therapy, the WPA also called on governments around the world to decrimalize homosexuality: “WPA supports the need to de-criminalise same-sex sexual orientation and behaviour and transgender gender identity, and to recognise LGBT rights to include human, civil, and political rights."
“There is no sound scientific evidence that innate sexual orientation can be changed,” the WPA wrote in the statement provided to BuzzFeed News.

Are you calling gay a behavior?
I really think gay, or any gender "difference" will ultimately be found to be a genetic variation, like eye color but more complex.
Gays are like blue-eyed folks, mutants.
Now we have proven you are not going to beat the gay out of them so lets bake them a cake when they want to get married.

I was pretty disappointed that I had no special powers either. Such a let down. Blue eyes should shoot lasers at will.

Ask a silly question get a totally irrelevant reply ,theres a lot of things I want to do ,but do not engage in . As a species we are called "sapient man " and supposedly we can chose our behavior( there are those who would argue that point ) .

For example, are you suggesting that each "normal" person has a free-will choice either to shoplift or not to shoplift? "Normal" of course covers a wide range of differences between individuals but assumes here a common experience regarding shoplifting.
A person who is not "normal" - who is outside the range - would be a person with kleptomania; a defect of some kind that impels them to act without choice.

I guess you could pretend with elevator shoes or colored contacts just as you could pretend to be straight, but in either case you would know the truth and others might see through the disguise.

I may be incorrect but I think he was addressing "behavior" - not orientation. Isn't his point something like, "I could benefit from being dishonest but choose instead to be honest and waive the benefit"? Maybe, he sees an old geezer unknowingly drop his wallet and the opportunity is there to just keep the money - no one would know - but instead he returns the wallet and all contents. Maybe that's not what he meant

I assume that what he is doing is making a sly swipe at the idea that the genes dictate gender preferences, thus downgrading homosexuality to a "behavior" (therefore controllable if one simply applies oneself), rather than something genetically influenced. Since the thread was not about stealing I am pretty sure that's what is going on. I am fairly certain that gay is like autism, not something one chooses but something that Ma nature bestows. One then does what one does with it then, and fortunately the opportunities to flourish with that which you are born is easier than it used to be. Gay folk have become strong putting up with intolerant and very ignorant BS. The old bigots are dying off and although they breed, the attitude of the offspring will be different than that of the parents.
My husband's nephew has a husband now and I have become a good bit more vocal in standing up for gays in general. They are fine folk and I want them to feel like they have family who will love them irrespective of their biological intricacies, not just love the sinner hate the sin crap, but real acceptance that this is who they are and it is just fine.

LOL!! One of my very good mate's sons, who I'm godfather to, came out last year. His dad, who I love to bits despite his being a Saffer, went from being a hard right wing Saffer to being so pro-gay rights I'm expecting to see him parade in next year's Mardi Grass in a pink tutu.

My 'minor' in college was "Television, Video, and Theatre Production." As a decidedly frustrated actor, early on I realized my limitations so I placed my energies into all aspects of theatre production for over ten years. (Avocation not vocation.) One thing I learned absolutely is that no theatre production, film, TV show, or group art project -- music or dance -- would rarely, if ever, be completed if members of the LGBT community were not included.
I think the current estimate for gays and lesbians in the US runs about 20% (+/-). In the Arts I'd probably say it run closer to 50%. Their contributions are endless. During my experience in the lively arts I was probably hit on by more men than women. If anyone has a thin skin or lack of tolerance when it comes to those who practice alternate lifestyles that person needs to rethink their own life and priorities. There is no longer a place for discrimination and/or hate towards them in today's society.
Our lives are filled with the exciting ambiance of sights and sounds that cannot be ignored. We wake with them and we go to bed with them. There would be little joy in life without the gay perspective and participation. They are not freaks, merely human being who happen to be different. They deserve the respect that we all deserve.

Who thought I was Gay bashing ?" Nothing of the sort ,some gay people I know are in the upper percentile of being nice and adorable Human beings and I do believe their are many more closet Gays then "straight " folks imagine .The attitude about Gays in this Redneck area is deplorable ,a couple of my acquaintances tore a rainbow flag off of a Gay mans porch ,I tried to give them a little lesson about hate crimes ,but I dont think it worked .Some of these unenlightened people would gladly join the ranks of the SS in my opinion .
I guess I sort of have a Freudian view of people in general ,so many around here have let their testicles overide their moral compass and common sense .It really bothers me when the Christians take a stance against people they dont understand .So much hate ,for no good reason .
