Well that's too bad...

I didn't care much for his music or his whole self-absorbed shtick, but he was only 57...

I thought "the number 3 celebrity death" would be Doris Day...who just turned 92... :?

When asked what it feels like to be the best guitarist alive, Eric Clapton said, "I don't know. Ask Prince."

The quote is apocryphal but the larger point is true. He really was that good.

Prince Is Dead

Post by RayThom »

Although the flu isn't likely to be the COD it is a respiratory illness and he always seemed a tad frail. My guess is he had a bizarre suicide pact with Chyna, the lady wrestler.

Prince was a great musician and showman, I attended two of his concerts with my ex back in the late '80s.

Which seems really odd, since they both knew Larry Coryell...

Flu kills a lot of people each year. Up to 50,000 in some years.

He had been sick for a bit. The other night he was on a plane which emergency landed in Moline and he went to an ER. Probably couldn't breathe.

Flu is a killer, and he probably didn't slow down and get it treated properly, lungs fill up with fluid and that's all she wrote.

Incredible musician, very iconic to my generation. This one hurts a lot, Purple Rain was the soundtrack of my teens.

RIP, Prince.

Prince... or Jimi Hendrix?

Good thing you qualified that by saying "alive", because I don't think any of those three — Prince, Clapton, or Coryell — could've held a candle to Jimi Hendrix.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

At the top levels of musicianship guitarists are so different in what they are trying to do and how they are going about it that I don't think you can rank them as better or worse guitarists. Rankings only work for people at a lower level, IMO.

Andres Segovia
John Williams
Charley Christian
Jimi Hendrix
Django Reinhart
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Jerry Garcia
BB King

and the list goes on.

I agree with rubato. There are quite a few extremely talented guitarists. It's not a contest.

Chet Adkins, Roy Clark, Jerry Reid, Glen Campbell_ I liked them all better than Prince. In fact, is it too early to speak ill of the dead>

Prince was a prima donna prick. I never liked him of his music. Purple Rain the movie absolutely blew chunks.

There, I said it.

The Artist formerly known as Alive? How dare you?

(100% agreement by the way except I didn't bother seeing Purple Rain but only because he was in it).

All music is a matter of taste - some people think Beethoven stinks. Prince was one of the top earning musicians of all time because his music was innovative and millions loved it, and he put on terrific live performances. Purple Rain was no terrific film in terms of script or acting, but the music was great.

I'm not sure why anyone would think Prince was a prick? He was a pretty private person who was immensely well loved by his community in MN because he was just a normal guy who treated people with kindness and decency, his last house party last weekend being a prime example - $10 tickets for regular fans, how many artists do that kind of thing?

That he was a very gifted musician is indisputable, like his music or not.
