Snapchat’s 420 Filter Celebrates Bob Marley With Blackface For Everybody
Image
I can just imagine the conversation at Snapchat a few weeks ago.

CEO — "We're coming up on 4/20, right?  Marijuana Day, right?"
Sycophants respond — "Right."  "Right!"  "You bet!"
CEO — "So, since we are supposed to be so edgy and all, what will we do to celebrate this?"
Soon-to-be-unemployed lackey — "Hey, I've got an idea.  Bob Marley used to blow a lot of weed, right?"
Sycophants again respond — "Right."  "Right!"  "You bet!"
Lackey — "So wadd'ya say we set up a filter so that every picture has dreadlocks and a reggae-type hat added to it?"
Sycophants — "Great!"  "Cool."  "Yeah!"
CEO — Well, I don't know.  First of all, Marley was black .... "
Lackey — "No problem.  We'll just set it so that everyone's face is digitally darkened."
Sycophant — "Great!"  "Yeah!"  "FANTASTIC idea!!"
CEO — "I'm not really sold on it, but what the hell, it's only for one day.  What could possibly go wrong?"

Much ado about nothing.

The Face Swap feature on my phone's Snapchat app has always had the ability to show people with a black face mask. I've swapped faces with Obama, Kanye West, and SnoopDog to name a few on numerous occasions. So why not Marley, especially on 420? The Rasta-mon was known to smoke a lot of dope so why not? FYI: There is also Beyonce and Nicki Manaji and more on the app.

The more everything is termed racist the quicker the word will lose its impact -- and that would be wrong. People need to be picky about choosing their battles -- this is not one of them.

Looks to me like some people needed to be upset about something and decided this was the 'victimization event of the day.' I can't see any reason for anyone to be upset about the Bob Marley Filter.

It sounds like it might have come from some people who are feeling guilty for being white and are... I mean, I'm like... offended in an epic way. (that's how they talk and it's another reason I hate them)

The fact that it's digital blackface doesn't suddenly redeem it over the kind that uses actual makeup.
