For the first time in 14 years (and only third time in history), Miss District of Columbia took home the crown at the Miss USA pageant on Sunday night.

Deshauna Barber, a 26-year-old Army officer and IT analyst for the U.S. Department of Commerce, won first place over Miss Georgia Emanii Davis and Miss Hawaii Chelsea Hardin, the runner-up.

Barber, who graduated from Virginia State University in 2011, joined the military at age 17. Her parents and siblings also serve; her father was deployed overseas to Iraq after the Sept. 11 attacks.

“I consider it to be a family tradition,” she said in a pre-show interview of military service. “It’s something that runs through our veins — patriotism and service for this country.”

Newly crowned Miss USA Deshauna Barber says she'll be taking a break from the Army Reserves to juggle her new duties.

The 26-year-old lieutenant from the District of Columbia was named the winner of Sunday's beauty pageant held in Las Vegas.

Barber, the first-ever military member to win Miss USA, will compete next in the Miss Universe contest.

She will use her year with the title supporting veteran's causes and hopes to tackle the issue of suicide and post-traumatic stress disorder among military members.

Wait a minute, here. Can a member of the US military pick and choose their assignment? If so, I'm thinking she may well be too chummy with her superiors -- if you know what I mean. ("Wink wink nudge nudge... say no more, say no more..."

Well, since this is also excellent promotion for the Army Reserves, I can't imagine that they wouldn't sign off on letting her have a temporary leave from her commitment for this...

I think the bar for being a virgin is set fairly low. Remember it is "Miss USA" and not "Miss Teen USA" where the bar is set a few microns higher.

Virginity is overrated in today's society. I advocate 'safety' over 'abstinence.' As a parent -- and a realist -- I knew it was futile to demand that my daughter not have sex. (Saying 'no' and forbidding sexual activity only exacerbates teen sex.)

Instead, whenever I was with my daughter, almost every time since she could talk back to me, we had some rudimentary discussion about sex. Not so much about the mechanics but the consequences, and how disruptive they can be to young lives. By the time she was fifteen and "experiencing the world" I knew to bite the bullet and let her work out her own destiny. My teaching day were now over and my guidance counseling days began -- as it was planned between us. My daughter is now the same age as the new Miss USA and I couldn't be happier with the wonderful, understanding, and loving relationship we share.

I'm glad I realized early on that virginity does not have to be the taboo that it's cracked up to be. It eliminated so many parent/child battles. Safety first is the answer. I'm a happy dad.

As a reservist she wouldn't be "postponing" much. We're talking 1 weekend a month, here. You can defer a couple drills and make them up later. Or, she can transfer to the IRR (Individual Ready Reserve, which has no drills but doesn't gain retirement points) and still maintain your eligibility, and rejoin the Selected Reserve (the drilling component that does gain retirement points) once she's done with her pageant stuff.

What have these pageants come to? MISS USA is 26 years old? She should have been married and have at least three kids by now. And how can she be MISS USA when USA means United States of America and the District of Columbia is not a state? She is clearly a parasite on the taaxpayer. She is double dipping as an employee of the Commerce Department AND collecting from the Defense Department. She doesn't even wear the Class A uniform.

Bring back Honey Boo Boo. There was beauty pageant contestant I could respect. Oh, the horror of degenerate American. Trump will make us great again. He knows how to run a beauty pageant.
