The Guinness book stopped reporting records like this decades ago for the very good reason that they didn't want to be in a position of encouraging self-destructive behavior

Can we get the rest of the media to follow suit?

Joey Chestnut eats 70 hot dogs, 17 more than Matt Stonie, to win Nathan's title

NEW YORK -- Joey "Jaws'' Chestnut beat his own record in regaining the Mustard Yellow International Belt on Monday, downing a stomach-churning 70 hot dogs and buns to top Matt "The Megatoad'' Stonie at the annual July Fourth eating contest.

Chestnut, 32, easily secured victory by polishing off 17 more hot dogs than Stonie, who last year ended Chestnut's streak of eight straight wins in a major upset to take the championship title at Nathan's Famous on Coney Island. The 70 hot dogs and buns gobbled by Chestnut were the most ever eaten at the competition. In 2013, Chestnut set a world record by eating 69 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. Contest officials said Chestnut also set a record last month when he ate 73½ hot dogs and buns during a qualifying event.

I don't like to think about all the types of harm people are doing to themselves in these 'contests'.

"I don't like to think about all the types of harm people are doing to themselves in these 'contests'."

Then don't think about it.

This is a distraction. It is a very human (American?) phenomenon. Focus on a problem that is small and comprehensible and not directly threatening to one's self, when one is overwhelmed by the potential destruction of so many other things. Sometimes called 're-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic"

Not to get all biblical but...

On Gluttony:
"... whose end is destruction, whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is in their shame, who set their minds on earthly things." Philippians 3:19

And what about all those starving pagan babies in Rwanda I used to throw money at back in catholic grade school? Obviously, no one learned a thing.

I'm against any and all forms of these choke'n'puke, competitive/speed eating contests. What's worse the "sport" is actually regulated by "the International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE) which hosts nearly 50 "Major League Eating" events across North America every year."

Just thinking about all the waste involved makes me want to throw up. I wish rotting teeth and anorexia on all these gluttons.

If that's what they want to do with their lives who amI to say they shouldn't.
Eating contests are not my thing, neither watching nor caring about.
But back in the day, a good drinking contest (fastest, most, variety....), that I could wrap my liver around.

and if you think it's a waste of food, think about how much a resturant throws away (even if they donate a bunch, there are food stuffs that patrons do not eat that I believe cannot be given away). So the next time you leave those broccoli spears or potatoe on your plate (and don't have the doggy bag) think about where that stuff ends up, in the dumpster. and maybe the dumpster divers plate
