Antioch: Two Arrested After Tampering with School Buses

By ECT - Mike Burkholder -

Jul 25, 2016

According to the Antioch Police Department, two people were arrested on June 16 for tampering with buses in the school parking lot on Shaddrick Drive.

Police say at 3:01 am, residents on Shaddick Drive called to report subjects tampering with the buses in the school parking lot. On arrival, officers confronted 22 year old Savannah Vetterli and 22 year old Richard Raymundo-Wilcox as they were trying to flee on foot. Both were detained without incident.

A third subject managed to flee on foot and was not located, but his truck was found nearby.

It was discovered that the 3 had been drilling the fuel tanks from parked buses and vans in the parking lot in order to get the fuel for their vehicle.

Both were booked into county jail without incident.

The last time this happened it was during the 70s fuel crises.

That is when the locking gas caps became common. This story should be filed under dumb criminals.

Lock them up. One count each of malicious destruction of property per bus, plus a separate count for each gallon of fuel, plus three counts of illegal disposal of toxic waste. They should be released when they are about 80 years old.

I would not oppose giving them lesser sentences if they agree to be irreversibly sterilized.

I posted this to illustrate what "life in the 'hood" is like.

I lived there for nearly 7 years and to me Antioch, CA will always be a hard-luck-town. This in NO WAY reflects upon the many fine and law-abiding people who reside there.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

People who do this kind of thing are so often addicted smokers and prone to carelessness about fire safety that they enlighten themselves.

Life is rich with opportunities for learning.

Okay, I tolerated the statement that this kind of thing hasn't happened since the 70s oil crises [sic], but now with the addition of that assertion, I just gotta say, WTF? :loon

When gas was a dollar more expensive than it is now, we had regular reports of siphoned gas tanks coming into the PD. Unless caught red handed or on security surveillance tape, it's pretty much an unsolvable crime. I'm quite sure some people do it even when gas is relatively cheap. And like all other thefts, some are from necessity - but many are just because they can.

I have no idea how you would be able to prove the second assertion. :shrug

SOP for Antioch, the stuff that goes on in that town defies logic.

I fixed more than one leaking gas tank with a sheet metal screw and a faucet washer.
Of course a more permanent repair was made later, but in a pinch, it worked.

I would guess the size of the holes these guys were making would not lend itself to that solution.

We used to syphon some gas when were were teens. Not because gas was expensive, (only $0.50/gallon IIRC) but because we needed all our cash for beer/booze.

We don't sentence people to life for petty theft, Jarl. (Except under horrible examples of the '3 strikes you're out' laws gone awry.)

Any business that is operating that close to utter failure has bigger problems overall. What if the brakes fail? What if there's engine trouble? Out of business overnight, huh?

Business insurance - it's a good thing to have. Savings for necessary costs of operating the business, like repairing vehicles - it's a good thing to have.

I like you Jarl, but I think you are overreacting. :shrug

It still happens, obviously more often than you'd believe. It's even happened to me, and not in a bad neighborhood.

My Questions: Did the buses have diesel engines? If so, was the truck they were stealing the fuel for also a diesel?
It would have made the third guy easy to catch if he misfueled it.

Back in the '30s and '40s, there were a lot of farm tractors that ran on what they called petroleum distillate. It was close to kerosene as far as volatility is concerned. The tractors were started on gasoline from a small tank, and switched over to distillate once they were warm. One time my grandfather's tractor had some distillate siphoned from its large tank. It didn't take long to find out which neighbor boy's car wouldn't start.

Gas tanks are cheap and easily replaced. You'd have to be pretty inept, or your "business" be pretty marginal to be shut down forever by a little thing like that.

No, not petty theft...illegal disposal of toxic waste! Reread the post: they DRILLED HOLES in the fuel tanks! When they were done, I'm sure thay didn't patch them...no, they let what fuel they didn't take drain on the ground! Bearing in mind that a truck can hold 100+ gallons, that will not be a small cleanup.
