Another quintessentially Canadian crime

After the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Caper, we have the Hockey Goalie Beer Heist:
It would be a scene from a clichéd Canadian movie — if it wasn't so bizarrely real.

RCMP in Manitoba have posted a YouTube video of two men, one of whom is dressed in beer-league goalie equipment, who smashed their way into a vendor and made off with cases of brewskies.

Under the glare of streetlight, the netminder runs off with a case in each hand and a goalstick under his arm.

It happened Aug. 15, just after 3:30 a.m. in the community of Russell. Video surveillance shows the two thieves climbing through the shattered glass, digging through the coolers, then lumbering away.

One of the men was wearing mitts or gloves, a large coat, ball cap and had his face covered.

The second man had a medium build and was wearing snowpants, a blocker, trapper and carrying a goalie stick.

While the RCMP are serious about catching the thieves, they didn't hesitate to have fun with their news release, noting the man dressed for guarding the crease might not have been an actual goalie.

"He may have been a defenceman or forward in disguise as he was wearing jersey #17 — a non-traditional number for goalies," the release states.

It goes on to say "anyone with information about this theft or has played against a goalie matching this description is asked to call Russell RCMP."

Oh, and the title of the RCMP's YouTube video of the crime? "#17 in your program but #1 on the Russell Manitoba RCMP wanted list."

Facial recognition software has provided a better identification of the two miscreants:

The RCMP reports that in addition to the cases of brewskis, the pair also made off with several cartons of smokes...

Even in Manitoba in August there can't be too many folk running around at 3am in goalie garb. Too long between the pipes without a mask?

More from Canada's most wanted list:
A naked intruder entered a Toronto backyard and took a bath. Then he made off with the owner’s tomatoes

TORONTO — Police say a naked tomato thief is on the loose in Toronto’s west end.

They say at about 8 p.m., officers received a call about a naked man who was seen in a residential backyard “soaping himself up” and washing off with a hose.

The garden intruder then took off with tomatoes from the backyard.

Toronto police say officers arrived at the home near Indian Grove and Dundas Street West, but the man had fled the scene.

A search was conducted in the neighbourhood, but police say the man or the tomatoes could not be found.

I'm thinking they were probably underage. Why else would they need to STEAL beer? The RCMP should wait until the local high school kids start bragging about the heist, or post something online about the party. They'll get their men.

I don't know about Canada, but anything with a federal tax stamp that is stolen in these parts is automatically a federal crime. I know liquor has such a stamp, but I'm not sure about beer.

Actually this time of year it's great. I just have too many memories of having to be up there for work 10 to 12 weeks a year in the winter.

Has anyone checked the whereabouts of Bubbles, Ricky and Julian during this heist? Sounds like their MO.

Around here, a pick-up game of ice hockey only occurs during the wee hours of the morning. It's the only time avaiable to rent the ice. The mounties should check local ice rinks and see if a bunch rented the ice around the time of the crime.
