NOT!

Regardless of what you think of the Pats, this is hysterical. Watch the whole 3+ minutes, I swear you'll be laughing out loud (except maybe Jets fans)....

Well, one game does not a season make...

(A phrase I coined yesterday after the 'Skins-Steelers game... :? )

But congrats to Tommy Boy for finally putting on his big boy pants and accepting his just and overdue punishment :ok

Hey, you know what's fun? Take a screenshot of the teams lined up for the snap and then mark the ones which will have major brain damage in 20 years. Or if you're into saving time, mark the ones that won't.
On December 1, 2012, Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend and drove to Arrowhead Stadium and killed himself in front of then GM Scott Pioli and then head coach Romeo Crennel. A year later, a family lawyer filed a wrongful death lawsuit, on behalf of Belcher's minor daughter, against the Chiefs alleging the team deliberately ignored warning signs of CTE, possibly leading to his suicide. The lawyer also hired a medical examiner to examine Belcher's brain for signs of CTE. On September 29, 2014, it was confirmed that he suffered from CTE.[29]

As of September 2015, 87 of 91 former National Football League (NFL) players were diagnosed post-mortem with CTE by Dr. McKee.[30] Former Detroit Lions lineman and eight-time Pro Bowler Lou Creekmur,[31] former Houston Oilers and Miami Dolphins linebacker John Grimsley,[32] former Tampa Bay Buccaneers guard Tom McHale,[33] former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry,[34] and former Chicago Bears safety Dave Duerson,[35] have all been diagnosed post-mortem with CTE. Other football players diagnosed with CTE include former Buffalo Bills star running back Cookie Gilchrist[36] and Wally Hilgenberg.,[37] among others.

An autopsy conducted by Dr. McKee in 2010 on the brain of Owen Thomas, a 21-year-old junior lineman at the University of Pennsylvania who committed suicide, showed early stages of CTE, making him the second youngest person to be diagnosed with the condition. Thomas was the second amateur football player diagnosed with CTE, after Mike Borich, who died at 42, was also diagnosed by Dr. McKee.[38] The doctors who performed the autopsy indicated that they found no causal connection between the nascent CTE and Thomas's suicide. There were no records of Thomas missing any playing time due to concussion, but as a player who played hard and "loved to hit people", Thomas may have played through concussions and received thousands of subconcussive impacts on the brain.[39]

In October 2010, 17-year-old Nathan Stiles died hours after his high school homecoming football game, where he took a hit that would be the final straw in a series of subconcussive and concussive blows to the head for the highschooler. The CSTE diagnosed him with CTE, making him the youngest reported CTE case to date.[40]

In July, 2011, Colt tight end John Mackey died after several years of deepening symptoms of frontotemporal dementia. BUSM was reported to be planning to examine his brain for signs of CTE.[41] The CSTE found CTE in his brain post-mortem.[42]

In 2012, retired NFL player Junior Seau committed suicide with a gunshot wound to the chest.[43] There was speculation that he suffered brain damage due to CTE.[25][44][45][46][47] Seau's family donated his brain tissue to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.[48] On January 10, 2013, the brain pathology report was revealed and Seau did have evidence of CTE.[49]

On July 27, 2012, an autopsy report concluded that the former Atlanta Falcons safety Ray Easterling, who committed suicide in April 2012, had CTE.[50][51]

The NFL has taken measures to help prevent CTE. As of July 2011, the NFL has changed its return-to-play rules.[citation needed] The number of contact practices has been reduced, based on the recent collective bargaining agreement.[clarification needed][52] ... "
You know what is even more fun? Not watching football.

Rube, can I make a suggestion? (and the rest of you can pay attention too)

When you start to post something like that latest cut-and-paste job from Wikipedia and there is an acronym in there (CTE) or some other jargon that not everybody might be familiar with, it is only a matter of good journalism if not just plain common courtesy to explain the acronym either by using the full term the first time it appears, or given as a parenthetic explanation.  Once it has been referred to **BY YOU, IN THE BODY OF YOUR POST** then it is OK to use the acronym or jargon without additional explanation.

So in the text you lifted from Wikipedia, the first reference to CTE should have looked something like this:
...A year later, a family lawyer filed a wrongful death lawsuit, on behalf of Belcher's minor daughter, against the Chiefs alleging the team deliberately ignored warning signs of CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, a progressive degenerative disease found in people who have had a severe blow or repeated blows to the head), possibly leading to his suicide.  The lawyer also hired a medical examiner to examine Belcher's brain for signs of CTE.  On September 29, 2014, it was confirmed that he suffered from CTE.[29]
Or you could have explained in it your opening lines:
Hey, you know what's fun? Take a screenshot of the teams lined up for the snap and then mark the ones which will have major brain damage — CTE, or Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (a progressive degenerative disease found in people who have had a severe blow or repeated blows to the head) — in 20 years.  Or if you're into saving time, mark the ones that won't.
See?  Piece of cake; anyone who is not versed in the medical field or has not been following this development like a bloodhound tracking a scent trail now knows what you are talking about without having to interrupt their reading to do a Google search (and possibly get side-tracked and never get back to your original posting).  And your readers will thank you for it.

Secondly, as long as I'm on my soapbox, why didn't you edit out those footnote numbers as well?  They do absolutely nothing within this forum other than to easily confirm which Wiki article you were visiting originally.

CTE has been in the news so often in recent months that one might think it was as unnecessary to define it as it would be to say "GOP" (Grand Old Party, a reference to the Republican Party).

And to the rest of you: You are free to watch public spectacles which destroy people's brains and take healthy athletic 22-year olds* and turn them into pathetic stumbling idiots whose lives are so painful they kill themselves but you are not entitled to do so without people noticing and commenting on it.

It is a scum activity and you deserve to be told that every time you do it.

Howard Cosell is more moral and more of a mensch than you are.

You murdered Junior Seau.

Every time you watch NFL football you deserve to be reminded of that fact.

Howard Cosell gave up something he loved, boxing, because he saw the truth. You need to grow up and do the same.

if it's you doing the telling, it will only enhance the experience. These are grown men who have the right to choose to play the sport or not, and spectators have the right to watch or not. If you feel you have to yell "scum activity" every time, go at it.

guin--I apologize for continuing this discussion; this is the end of it for me.

My comment is not actually directed at the substance of rube's comments, but at the whiney schoolboy mud slinging, exemplified by the post immediately above mine.

I agree with you BigRR - to the extent free will is involved and there is not coercion or coverup of information. Both issues that, I don't believe, can be answered clearly at this time.

I agree Guin, and do think the NFL and players union have to continue to look into this and see what sort of safety equipment and procedures should be implemented to lessen the danger. But above all, full disclosure is needed, and should be demanded by everyone. The jury is out on these issues right now.

J.J. who?

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2665 ... at-in-afc#
The New England Patriots entered Week 3 beset by injuries. The team was on its third-string quarterback. Its star tight end had yet to take the field. Head coach Bill Belichick had only four days to get a rookie quarterback ready to face an undefeated opponent and the league's best defensive player.

Yawn.

The Patriots didn't just beat the Houston Texans on Thursday night to move to 3-0 on the season. They throttled them 27-0. And in doing so, the Pats sent a message to the rest of the AFC.

That message? "We're the best team in the league—and we'll beat you senseless with one hand tied behind our backs."
:ok :ok :ok
