Man alleges ageism after getting banned from Starbucks for asking teen barista on date


SPOKANE, Wash. -- A 37-year-old man says he was banned from a Starbucks in Washington state after asking a 16-year-old barista out to dinner, CBS Spokane affiliate KREM reports.

The man, who was not identified by KREM since he has not been charged with a crime, said he was at Starbucks in Spokane last week and wrote a note asking out a barista.

“I was flirted with by a barista. For some reason she thought I was funny. Said I was funny. So I gave her a note to see if she’d be interested in dinner,” the man wrote in a Facebook post.

He said that when he went back the next day, a police officer told him he was banned from the Starbucks.

Spokane police said businesses are allowed to refuse service to people for as long as they see fit. But the man says he’s facing discrimination due to his age.

“I know the female Starbucks barista was of legal age to date,” the man said. “I broke no laws. I merely took a chance with my heart. I’m tired of hearing the word ‘creep’ as any black person or gay person is tired of hearing certain words. I have a whole webpage dedicated to age gap love.”

He asked his friends on Facebook to call Starbucks and complain -- but the request was met with opposition.

Many people took to the Spokane Starbucks’ Facebook page to praise the store for barring the man from the location.

“I have never been so proud to be a Starbucks customer!” one user wrote. “As a teen I had to deal with similar issues working in a restaurant as a hostess. It is an uncomfortable position no girl want to be put in. Thank you so much for supporting your employees.”

A Starbucks spokesperson said, “We have no tolerance for any such inappropriate behavior or harassment, and we will continue to support our store partners and local authorities investigating the situation.”

Whereas I have no problem with "age gap" relationships -- Hollywood is full of them and I'm no stranger to them myself -- I find this guy really creepy. His playing the ageism card is surely a ruse to make him appear the victim rather than the degenerate he is. The fact that he has an active website dedicated to the this kind of behavior indicates it borders on a sick obsession. Then looking over his Facebook page it seems that it's not just dating a younger woman, but he also appears quite capable of dismembering her body prior to committing suicide. Red flags all over the place. I have a strong feeling the authorities are already familiar with him, and informed the Starbucks management who then, in turn, make him persona non grata.

Yeah, having a website devoted to such is a pretty big red flag. Sure, dating may not be illegal, and Washington State's somewhat muddled age of consent laws do say that the age of consent is 16, barring certain circumstances (none of which apply in this case), but then there's the whole blaming the victim (claiming flirting and such). I realize that many guys, myself included, have a hard time distinguishing friendliness from interest, but this was a case where her job was to be friendly.

He says that he has gotten a lot of "hateful messages" (gee, I can't imagine why) but I'll tell you something funny...

Now that this guy has gotten some publicity, and will presumably be exposed to a larger audience, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if some young woman in his desired demographic takes him up on his date pleas...

Probably a woman who is every bit as much a dented can as he is...

I would be the last person to criticize someone for dating people younger then them per se...

Kelly is 12 years younger than me, and I also dated a woman for about a year who was 17 years younger (I think I mentioned before that I took her to Vegas for her 21st birthday)

But this guy is something else....

If you read through that "manifesto" of his, parts of it read like the kind of maniacally obsessed, angry, bitter screeds that sometimes come to public light after the wacko has gone on a killing spree and then either been taken out by the cops or turned the gun on himself...

He really comes across like a ticking time bomb of rage...

(a) When a person, as a result of a mental health disorder, is a danger to others, or to himself or herself, or gravely disabled, a peace officer, professional person in charge of a facility designated by the county for evaluation and treatment, member of the attending staff, as defined by regulation, of a facility designated by the county for evaluation and treatment, designated members of a mobile crisis team, or professional person designated by the county may, upon probable cause, take, or cause to be taken, the person into custody for a period of up to 72 hours for assessment, evaluation, and crisis intervention, or placement for evaluation and treatment in a facility designated by the county for evaluation and treatment and approved by the State Department of Health Care Services.

Seems to me this would be a pretty prudent move...

And the cops could also look in to whether in addition to what he has posted publicly on the internet, if he has sent anything threatening or of a cyber stalking nature through email or social media to anyone who has "rejected" him... (It's possible he has, and nobody has reported it)

Probably, but Washington State's public mental health system is quite broken. Basically they just warehouse mental health patients in ERs until beds become available at the psychiatric facility, which doesn't happen much since it's underfunded.

It is in the Starbucks operations manual that the manager can choose to refuse service to creepy and demented jerks. I don't think that is a protected class, but I haven't checked in awhile.
