Mary was an interesting woman; I was secretly in love with her when the Dick Van Dyke show was on, and her character was as central to the show as Dick's. Four score years is a pretty good run--although I I get closer to it, I'm sure my viewpoint will change. RIP.

RIP:

Actress Mary Tyler Moore, best known for her role in "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and her own subsequent self-titled sitcom, has died, according to the Associated Press. She was 80.

The actress was reported to be in "grave condition" at a hospital in Connecticut earlier today by TMZ, but it's unclear at this time what led to her death.

Moore had been dealing with several health problems in recent years; in 2011, she underwent elective brain surgery for a benign tumor. A rep for the actress told the press at the time that it was a "fairly routine procedure."

Very sad to hear this...

Except for Ted Knight, all the other people in that picture are still living, and they're all older than she is...

And who would have ever thought that Dick Van Dyke would out live her...

We call it Type 1 Diabetes (or "T1D") nowadays, because it's not always "juvenile" -- in fact, MTM herself wasn't diagnosed until age 33. She was a great advocate for JDRF (formerly known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), which is the world's largest funder of scientific research to improve therapies and find a cure for the disease. I urge everyone to make a contribution to JDRF in her memory. Please. (Also too, my son has T1D and I was promised we'd have a cure "within 10 years" when he was diagnosed. There have been some amazing breakthroughs, but we're running a bit behind schedule, so more money would help.)

More money sent. For your boy, in memory of Mary, and for one of my dearest friends who is also T1D.

I have a nephew with Type 2 Diabetes as well, and keep the JDF within my usual donations group.

I'm borderline type II. 5.9 I think was my number. Been altering my diet and keeping an eye on it. Don't want another pill. Trying to get off the ones I am taking.

Me TV is a lesser known network that shows older shows, probably ones that they can buy for next to nothing. Some may well be 'public domain' by now. They will be airing several MTM shows Sunday afternoon, Jan 29.
