Stupidity, thy name is "The Centennial School Board"

PORTLAND, Ore. --
The Centennial School Board voted to change the names of three elementary schools in the district Wednesday night over concerns of offensive language.
The change will remove the name "Lynch" from two schools.
Lynch Wood and Lynch Meadows elementary schools will be known temporarily as Wood Elementary and Meadows Elementary, pending new names for both schools. Lynch View Elementary will be permanently changed to Patrick Lynch Elementary school.
In the late 1800s, Patrick Lynch donated a parcel of land to the district, which is why so many schools included his name. In recent years, district officials said some students and families had complained that the name "Lynch" made them think of the verb, lynch, and the racist connotation behind it.

Yes, because there's no difference between Loretta Lynch or Patrick Lynch and Lynch View, Lynch Wood, or Lynch Meadows.
This is a non-story story. There's no harm in changing the names, it still honors the honoree while respecting the people whose ancestors were being lynched as recently as 50+ years ago. Much ado about nothing getting puffed up about it.

Can anyone explain how removing the name of the person who donated the land from the schools is a "clarification"?
Or are they going to be called "This school is named after a man called Robert who had a surname which may cause fluffy bunnies to be offended Elementary School."

Definitely not any difference. They are all indications of a link to the lynch family.

How does it honour the honouree to have their name struck off for wrong reasons?

Just in case anyone sane was wondering...
Lynch Name
Meaning Irish: reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Loingsigh ‘descendant of Loingseach’, a personal name meaning ‘mariner’ (from long ‘ship’).
This is now a common surname in Ireland but of different local origins, for example chieftain families in counties Antrim and Tipperary, while in Ulster and Connacht there were families called Ó Loingseacháin who later shortened their name to Ó Loingsigh and also Anglicized it as Lynch. Irish (Anglo-Norman): Anglicized form of Gaelic Linseach, itself a Gaelicized form of Anglo-Norman French de Lench, the version found in old records.
This seems to be a local name, but its origin is unknown. One family of bearers of this name was of Norman origin, but became one of the most important tribes of Galway. English: topographic name for someone who lived on a slope or hillside, Old English hlinc, or perhaps a habitational name from Lynch in Dorset or Somerset or Linch in Sussex, all named with this word.

Being upset over the word "Lynch" when "Lynch" is a proper historical name with no relationship whatsoever to "lynch" involved with hanging, evinces a level of ignorance that the one who is upset should feel embarrassed about...
Much like the level of ignorance on display with those who are offended by the use of the word "niggardly"...

I think it shows a
F-A-A-A-A-A-R great level of ignorance, as "niggardly" is not a common surname.

One of the schools is retaining the land donor's full name, the other two are yet to be determined.
The world is constantly changing around you; much of British history is buried under modern Britain. In all likelihood, even if you are well loved at this moment and have procreated, in just a few generations nobody will remember anything much about you. Street names change all the time, buildings named after people get renamed after someone else or torn down altogether, monuments are taken down and others put up in their place. I certainly have no issue with a small change like this to address a concern of people who have been systematically oppressed for hundreds of years, and I doubt very much that Mr. Lynch cares either.
Just a lot of manufactured outrage by persons entirely unaffected by something that is really only the business of the folks in that community.

Just wait until they make the Red Sox stop using the word
'red' because of its perceived connotation with communism, for example, or paint over the Morse code initials on the scoreboard at Fenway. Or better yet, tear down Fenway Park itself and rebuild it in one of the 'burbs as
"Generic Commercial Name" Field or something like that. Methinks you'll be whistling an entirely different tune then.

I'm quite certain that Fenway will eventually pass away. And maybe someday the Boston Red Sox will revert to their original name, the Boston Americans.
Things change; that's the only constant in life.
eta: Nobody really refers to communists as Reds anymore, maybe because there really aren't any big scary communists to be afraid of anymore - Russia is an oligarchy now.

Maybe someday, in a
utopian sane future, "RED" will again have the connotation of "anti-American" because of the association with "red states" and Trump.
BTW, I'm old enough to remember when, for a few years during the mid-to-late 1950s, the Cincinnati Reds changed their name to the Cincinnati Redlegs. I may have owned one of these baseball cards:
