The one clear benefit to becoming reduced to a terrible credit rating is that one becomes entirely impervious to identity theft.

It's things like this that convinced me to add identity theft coverage to my homeowners insurance--doesn't cost much but could help if I'm ever a victim.

Yeah, well no. The biggest problem with ID theft is that the thief can run up bills in your name and then the merchants etc. come after you for payment. Big RR's ID theft coverage is mostly useful for having an outside agency do all the credit card cancelling and legal assistance.

I've used Equifax (and it doesn't matter if you do or not because credit agencies like them get the input from banks, car dealers etc., rather than from the consumer) and the only direct cost-risk I can see is on my Chase card. And Chase will refuse to pay whatever I dispute as not being my charge.

It's the indirect impersonator costs that concern me

Right, but if you can't get credit extended because your credit rating or income is insufficient, an identity thief can't use your identity to get credit either.

Poverty has its advantages. :D

Great idea, I'm putting that on my list for next week. I'm about to change insurance companies anyway, would be good to see if the new vendor offers this coverage in the policy.
