How do you number your fingers?

In the traditional wedding ceremony of most mainline protestant churches , at some point the minister turns to the groom and says "will you please place this ring on the third finger of her left hand."

On Jeopardy tonite I learned that this 'ring finger' is also called the fourth finger. Huh? I have always used the simple terminology that the typical human has four fingers and one thumb on each hand.

I've never numbered fingers. Thumb, pointer, Middle, (whatever the next one is) and little.

And I've never figured out which is the index finger (I just looked it up, same as pointer finger). "Ring Finger" would be the one next to the little finger but I don't wear rings so it's inapplicable to me.

This has worked for me since I learned to count way back in high school. I always include my thumb as a finger, but refer to it as a thumb when I need to.

Oddly, when I count on my fingers I start with the little finger.

Yes, I count on my fingers. I don't know why. I hid it from my teachers in grade school by using hash marks on my papers as a substitute, but got caught doing that too. So then I used dots which were easier to erase. For some reason I was never able to memorize addition tables like I could times tables. Since I could always do the calculation by hand, I didn't need to. Teachers quit bugging me about the dots by high school, and while I had passable grades in Algebra and Trig, I excelled in Physics and Calculus was oddly easy. Not that I remember any of it.

But I cannot do significant math in my head. I can't keep enough numbers in my head long enough to get the answer, because the numbers jumble. I can't even remember a phone number long enough to jot it down 30 seconds later. I have all the digits- just not in the right order. I call it being "numerically dyslexic". So any time I need to do large numbers, I resort to long form, on a sheet of paper.

That would be chisanbop which is a Korean abacus-like finger counting used to perform basic arithmetic.

Here's Fred "Flubber" MacMurray to tell you all about it.

Digitally? Then all those computer experts who deal with binary do it how? Perhaps one mouth, open or closed.
