NEW YORK -- Police and witnesses say a motorist drove onto a busy bicycle path near the World Trade Center memorial and struck several people, then emerged from the vehicle screaming and firing something that appeared to be a gun.
Multiple people died in the incident.
An Associated Press photographer on the scene Tuesday witnessed at least two bodies lying motionless on the path beneath tarps.
The incident occurred at West Street and Chambers Street around 3:10 p.m, the station reports. The NYPD said on its Twitter account just before 3:30 p.m. that one person is in custody. The department isn't looking for any other suspects, CBS New York reports.
Witnesses told local media a vehicle drove down a nearby bike path and struck pedestrians and cyclists. A man who was riding in an Uber along the West Side Highway near Chambers street says he saw several bleeding people on the ground after a truck struck several people.
CBS New York reports the incident is being investigated as a possible case of road rage in which a driver exited a vehicle and opened fire.
A witness said the truck had also collided with a small bus and one other vehicle.
A large number of police vehicles could be seen near West Street and Chambers Street, which is near a community college, a high school and a few blocks north of the National Sept. 11 Memorial.
The NYPD says information is preliminary and the investigation is ongoing.
Residents were cautioned to avoid the area and to expect many emergency personnel in the area. Nearby Stuyvesant High School was on lockdown as a precaution, the station reports.
Additional information wasn't immediately available.

Truck Driver Kills Eight in Lower Manhattan Terrorist Attack
Eight people were killed and a dozen more were injured Tuesday when a motorist in a rented pickup truck deliberately drove down a bike path in lower Manhattan and mowed down several people before crashing into a school bus. Officials said it was a terrorist attack.
The gunman hopped out of the truck and shouted "Allahu Akbar" before firing a BB or pellet gun, four senior law enforcement sources told NBC News.
A police officer on patrol in the area returned fire, hitting the suspect in the abdomen and ending the Halloween horror less than a mile from the World Trade Center, site of the deadliest terror attack on U.S. soil on Sept, 11, 2001. [this dirt bag must be very surprised to still be alive...jumping out of a truck in front of the cops after committing a deed like this with a gun in each hand...even if they weren't real firearms...he undoubtedly expected to end this by being "martyred"...]
"This was an act of terror and particularly cowardly act of terror," Mayor Bill de Blasio said later at a briefing. "We know this action was intended to test our spirit."
O'Neill did not identify the Home Depot from where the truck was rented. Nor would O'Neill comment on whether the suspect lived in New York City or was a "radicalized American."
But the weapons they recovered turned out to be a pellet gun and a paint ball gun. And records revealed he lived for a time in Paterson, N.J.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said this appeared to be the work of a "lone wolf." [I wonder if the people who were bitching about the term "lone wolf" being used to describe a white supremacist who commits an act of terrorism on their own will be similarly unhappy with its use in this case of Islamist-Jihadist terrorism...well, okay, I don't really wonder that...]
"There's no evidence to suggest a wider plot," he said.
The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force joined in the investigation.

The Islamist nut case was gut shot, I hope it hurt like hell.

Sadly, our new normal.
Hours after this, NYC hosted their annual Halloween strut in the same area.

The murderous racist police gunned down another innocent man color. Fortunately this attempted assassination failed. When will it end and a man of god will be allowed to protest in peace? The remedy to this bigotry is to allowing open immigration from these countries so that America can be a more godly country.

Kudos to NYC for how they’ve handled this most recent terror attack and for going forward with their awesome Halloween parade.
I also appreciated the comments from the governor, mayor, etc. today chastising IQ45 for his stupid tweets attempting to politicize the event.
I do believe this is our new normal; how we conduct ourselves in the face of inevitable terrorism will be our greatest test as a people.

Oh please - tell that to the Israeli people who have lived with terror attacks for decades. Tell it to the British citizens who endured the random attacks of the IRA during the Troubles.
Lots of places around the world endure conflict and terror attacks, it’s just relatively new to US.
I’m still a hell of a lot more concerned about being collateral damage in the wake of an angry white man’s public shooting spree than I am a terror attack rooted in foreign sympathies. Our home grown terrorists are hiding behind any neighbor’s face, just waiting to explode.

Yes, it is new to us. American exceptionalism.
The last time I was in Paris, summer of 1963, there were cops walking in pairs on nearly every street corner. They wore their picturesque uniform with the round rigid caps and the lovely blue and red capes. I was informed those capes were weighted and more effective in a fight than the billy club or baton carried by most USofA cops back then. They also all shouldered submachine guns. A hotel a couple of blocks from mine was bombed while I was there.
I returned to Independene Missouri in October. When I was informed by the gas pump jockey where I bought some lube for my differential that I was rebuilding, that President Kennedy was dead. My first, second and third thought was all "NO! That can't be! This is America. WE don't do that, We are not crazy Frenchmen."
Not new to us. We have convenient memories.

I don't even want to read the comments in the online articles about this because I know all too well there would be several hundred postings from various ignorant and anonymous nutbags lamenting the fact that he only managed to kill 8 cyclists, and that it served them
(the cyclists) right since they should get all those fucking bicycles off the road anyway.... even though they *WERE* off the road and the ISHIT 'freedom fighter' drove ONTO a dedicated cycle path to wreak his havoc.

I doubt if those comments will appear. I feel you're projecting.
Unfortunately, I'm not going to look for any online articles and you're not going to look either. So I guess we'll never know.

The bicyclists were on a BIKE PATH - there is no nexus whatsoever to ‘share the road’ etiquette issues. I don’t believe any such comments would come into play.
The Argentinian men killed were celebrating their 30th school reunion - there’s a heartbreaking video clip on the web taken by one of them just moments before the monster mowed them down. They were riding Citibikes, enjoying a glorious fall day in the company of dear old friends - I hope the end was swift and painless.

Bowe Bergdahl, the former hostage who pleaded guilty to desertion, avoids prison
The general court martial sentenced him to a $10,00fine, reduction in rank to E1, forfeiture of all pay and benefits, and a dishonorable discharge
The court spent the last week determining sentence. Command Influence [statements from the Commander in Chief about what this solder should get] were a major factor in this sentence.
The statements from POTUS about this killer of 8 in New York, who POTUS said should be tried by military court in Gitmo, and then executed, because the criminal justice system is just a joke, could be an important part of the defense for this trial Trump just has no idea of the import of anything he does..

Yes, once again he knows more than his colonels. There is an interesting item in
today's NYT which points out that due to his dishonorable discharge, he will be denied the mental health care he so obviously needs.
