When I heard that Trump had pardoned the National Turkey, the first thing that went through my mind was, "I didn't know that the POTUS could issue a pardon to himself."

One of my childhood friends migrated to Northern Missouri when his father quit the local steel mill (later destroyed by Bain Capital) to operate a turkey farm. My friend came back to visit occasionally and had lots of stories about how the turkeys would find such interesting ways to kill themselves--like stampeding together into the corner of a fenced lot when a hawk flew over head and the first few to arrive at the fence would be crushed to death. Wild turkeys are another animal entirely. (also lots of stories about drag racing tractors.)

Important note from a dude I know: under no circumstances will encountering a wild turkey improve your motorcycle ride. Encountering one at 80MPH will do approximately $1000 worth of damage to a Road Glide, as well as ruining your pillon rider's jacket. It will also ruin your plans, because said damage will necessitate stopping early, finding a Harley Davidson dealer, and getting said Road Glide repaired, as well as a new jacket.

I'm guessing new underwear as well.

I know a guy whose seven or eight year old Taurus was "totaled" by hitting a turkey a few years ago. The stupid wild bird flew directly toward the Ford which was doing a little over 60 MPH. He figured the turkey was going about 30. It took out the headlight assembly, grille panel, the fiberglass header panel behind the headlight, the radiator, condenser, one fan, hood, and made a BIG dent in the windshield. His insurance company gave him $1900 to keep the car. Used matching green parts from a salvage yard were just over $400. His kid still drives the car in his third year of college.

No, and the Mythbusters proved it.  While it sounds logical at first glance — after all, 50 + 50 = 100 — one needs to remember that
1) the crash involves TWO vehicles, neither one of which is an immovable object like a solid wall, and
2) since there are two vehicles involved, the force of the impact is absorbed by 2x the mass of a single car hitting a wall.

Or to put it into equation form:  impact force 'F' = speed 'V' ÷ mass 'M'.

So if you have TWO vehicles, each at 50 mph, you double 'V' (50 x 2).  But you must also double 'M' ... again, because you have two vehicles ... hence 2x the mass of a single-car crash.  And after reducing '2V'/'2M' to the lowest common denominator, you find yourself back at the original equation of F=V÷M.

So what's a wild turkey's mass, 6:00, 7:00 or 8:00?

According to "Fun facts about turkeys" In the wild, turkeys range from 5-20 pounds.
A five pound bird wouldn't total a Taurus, but some turkey did.
And
Wild turkeys have very powerful legs and can run at speeds up to 25 miles per hour. Their top speed in flight is 55 miles per hour.

For the sake of argument, lets say the turkey was crossing the Taurus' path instead of heading toward it. Would it have done as much damage? I'd guess not.

Or what if the turkey had been flying away from the 60 MPH car at 25 MPH? No way it would have done that much damage with a closing speed of 35.
