In the world of sore losers Laroque is the biggest baby I have seen with her refusing to wear her silver medal. She later apologized, but that is pretty ridiculous and shows a great disrespect for the other competitors.

Oh FFS give it a rest, she shook everyone's hands, she stood there respectfully for the anthem, and people are acting as if she pulled down her pants and took a crap on the podium. She got upset, did something that was rather childish, and apologized for it. In a world where Russian athletes are tolerated in competition after demonstrating that they cannot be trusted to compete without doping, it speaks volumes of where some people's priorities are that this is still a story two days later.

I hadn't heard about this...(It wasn't mentioned during the medal ceremonies while they were unfolding)

For anyone else who may not have heard about it:
Canadian hockey player apologizes for refusing to wear silver medal after loss to U.S.

When it comes to Olympic hockey, Canada has a thing for gold.

Silver medals? Yuck. So very yuck, in fact, that, after the U.S. women’s team scored an epic, gold medal-clinching, 3-2 shootout victory over their chief rival Thursday in the PyeongChang Games, one Canadian player could not chuck her cootie-laden silver medal quickly enough. No sooner had the silver medal nestled onto the chest of the dejected Jocelyne Larocque than she removed it, as if to say, “Don’t get too comfortable there.”

Laroque subsequently issued an apology for her act, saying, “In the moment, I was disappointed with the outcome of the game, and my emotions got the better of me.”

“I meant no disrespect — it has been an honour to represent my country and win a medal for Canada,” Larocque said in a statement. “I’m proud of our team, and proud to be counted among the Canadian athletes who have won medals at these Games.

“Being on the podium at the world’s biggest sporting event is a great achievement and one that I’m thankful I was able to experience with my teammates.”

I thought when I saw that picture, "Well, maybe she's 18 or 19, and this is the first time she's competed at this level", but she's older than she looks in that photo...

She's 29, and also participated in the Sochi Olympics 4 years ago:
Jocelyne Dawn Marie Larocque (born May 19, 1988) is a Canadian ice hockey player for Canada women's national ice hockey team[1] and a former defencemen with the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. With the Bulldogs, she was a two-time NCAA Division I national champion (2008, 2010).

She participated in the Canadian National Team Fall Festival that ran from August 31 to September 9, 2007. She was an Air Canada Cup women’s champion in 2005–06 and 2006–07. On November 27, 2009 Larocque and Brianne Jenner were released from Hockey Canada's centralized roster to determine the roster for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games.[11]

Despite not qualifying for the roster competing at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games, she was named to the final roster for the 2010 MLP Cup[12] Larocque had an assist in the semifinal of the 2010 MLP Cup.[13] In addition, she attended the Hockey Canada Strength and Conditioning Camp in Calgary from May 25 to 30, 2010.[14] In addition, Larocque competed with Canada at the 2010 Four Nations Cup and won a gold medal.[15] Her Olympic debut with the national team came in a gold medal at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

I get that emotions were running high right after the game, especially in a game so closely fought (and a game that the Canadian players probably expected to win, given that they had won four straight against the US national team in their most recent meetings) but while they were understandably unhappy at the loss, not one of her team mates (including some that were younger and less experienced than she) displayed the lack of graciousness and maturity that Laroque did...

And I'm sure they felt the sting of the defeat every bit much as she did...

That was just a moment of inexcusably poor sportsmanship and childish, spoiled brat behavior on her part.

Steroids are know to cause edginess and anxiety. I'll hold comment about Larocque's antics until her post-game drug test results are revealed.

That's a pretty fucking sleazy accusation to be making without a shred of evidence to support it. Totally in character for you, though.

Is this the worst we got on Canada? Let’s not forget Ryan Lochte; USA is still #1 in Olympian assholery!

Precisely. This was a stupid and childish thing to do, but from the press coverage it continues to get, you would think it was absolutely the most contemptible act to ever occur in connection with the Olympics. Never mind the doping, the corruption, the judging scandals, and yes, punk ass Ryan Lochte whose criminal behaviour was rewarded with an appearance on Dancing with the Fuckwad Stars, this woman has to be nailed to the fucking cross why? Because the world expects Canadians to be fucking saints every fucking moment of their lives and the imaginary Christian God forbid that one should show herself to have feet of clay for one fucking split second of her life and deserves to be labelled an inexcusable brat.

Go fuck yourselves, the sanctimonious fucking lot of you.

I forgive you for going Larocque on the sanctimonious lot here. I'm sure your emotions got the better of you.

It's all about ratings. They're looking for something to happen that will get people to pay attention and get more viewers. Creating a controversy is all they've been able to do, other than showing people crashing and getting injured in the snow.

Make an issue of Russian doping, then. Write stories about why, after the IOC bent over backwards trying to accomodate Russian athletes who MIGHT have been dope-free, two Russian athletes still failed drug tests, and why that didn't immediately result in EVERY Russian athlete being sent packing and EVERY Russian medal won at these Games being revoked because there is no way of knowing if systemic doping is continuing. But I guess that isn't as easy a story as catching the normally overpolite Canadians in a moment when one of them had a muted version of a hissy fit.

And a happy birthday to you, too, Scoot. I'm so ashamed of myself... not!

There is rarely a "shred of evidence" of drug use by any athlete... until the test is taken and analyzed. I feel so foolish thinking too much like a WADA lab official.

Another story that should have received more play - how millions of Americans took to social media to wish bad results on Lindsay Vonn and Adam Rippon after their public comments demonstrated less than effusive praise for the current administration in the White House.

Agreed... that is bothersome. It's the price of celebrity in a cyber world. They'll work through it, I'm sure.

I hope most of us are not judged for a single foolish or childish action. It's a tradition in the NHL that when you win the conference title the team does not touch the trophy because it isn't the one they want. The Campbell Bowl (Western Conference cup) is a nice looking piece of silverware and you have to be pretty good to win it.

U.S. men win curling gold! And they're from Minnesota so they'll have better manners than those whiny childish Canadadians.
