We do have excellent schools here . . . I count it among the greatest tragedies of my life that I was dragged from the MA school system to the AZ school system between 4th and 5th grades, and at the same time my mother went from very involved with our academics/activities to deeply depressed and apathetic about parenting.
My brother and I had been excellent students with perfect attendance in MA, but when we arrived in AZ, we went into classes that were teaching things we'd learned a grade or more before, and we quickly became very bored. We both ended up as HS dropouts, proving that it isn't just underachievers or students will learning disabilities that fall through the cracks - it happens a lot with gifted students, especially those trapped in inferior school systems. We both ended up going to college - on to graduate and professional schools in my case - but I often wonder what might have been had I stayed in MA and started out my higher education at Smith or Wellesley or even UMass Amherst. C'est la vie!
Inferior schools are very much a pipeline to prison for far too many kids.

I sent a link to that sign to my Okie school-teacher sister. If the statistics are correct, that's very interesting.

Here are the most recent rankings of education quality by state:
https://www.edweek.org/ew/collections/q ... kings.html
And here is the latest data on incarceration rates by state:
https://www.sentencingproject.org/the-f ... option=SIR
It's not exactly perfectly inverse, but damned close.

Depends on what you count. The numbers I have seen differ from that sign. And the numbers also ignore the big drivers of costs and incarceration, socio-economic factors, cost of living (high cost of living places spend a lot more on education than lower cost places), etc. The basic premise has been shown to be true -- if you can get more kids to graduate from high school, you can lower crime rates which lowers incarceration -- but like most memes, that sign simplifies a complex situation. For example, Louisiana has increased its education spending at a faster rate over the last 30-35 years than Massachusetts, so you can hardly say that one is addressing the issue and one is not.

Correlation is not causation. Yep. Standard logical fallacy. But to be repetitious-it is damn interesting.
Paul Krugman writes frequently about "zombie ideas". Ideas for programs that will not die, in spite of reality demonstrating over and over they don't work. For Krugman the main one is the GOP dogma that lowering tax rates increases actual tax flowing to government because the economy (thus the tax base) grows. For me, the 'get tough on crime' is political dogma that fails as well. Government investment in education, transportation, general public safety like clean water and safe food produce long term positive returns, but they are unacceptable in our present political environment.

Louisiana state senate votes to make bestiality illegal
Ignoring for the moment how the individual legislators voted, I think the more significant question that needs to be answered is what sort of people
(and I use that term, under these circumstances, with extreme reservations) are living in Louisiana that made such a law even necessary?

FWIW, as long as the animal cruelty laws remain in place, making bestiality legal doesn't bother me in the least.

The ones who don't have kids or siblings? (I know, Cajun and hillbilly humor can be cruel).

Not sure you're correct on that one, Big RR...

Caddo animal shelter employee accused of having sex with dog
Monday, February 27th 2017, 4:49 pm EDT
By KSLA Staff
SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
A Caddo Parish Animal Shelter kennel worker is out on bond after her arrest on a charge of crimes against nature and a former CPAS employee is accused of recording the act on video.
According to Shreveport City Jail booking records, 24-year-old Celina Ann Cabrera of Shreveport was arrested Friday after police investigated a report that
she had sex with a dog and that she had videos of the act.
A former CPAS employee was also arrested Friday in connection with the case.
41-year-old Booker Talioterro Thomas, Jr. of Shreveport was booked into the Shreveport City Jail, charged with principal to crimes against nature. Booking details indicate Booker recorded Cabrera having sex with his dog.
Caddo Parish Public Information Officer Krystle Grindley initially said Monday that Cabrera was placed on administrative leave immediately after the commission was made aware of the arrest, but later confirmed that Cabrera had already been on leave since February 15.
Grindley said she could not confirm the reason for that leave citing personnel privacy issues.

But I do wonder--what d we do about the children, which may well come if the sex is untprotected? A state with man-dog, man-cat, and man-farm animal hybrids walking around could be a problem--especially when the legislature has to decide what bathroom they can use (or do they just go outside)?

Animal lovers.
A guy moves from the big city to a small town in the Midwest, and notices there are no women. He goes to the local bar and strikes up conversation with the locals.
"Guys, you have a nice town here, but there are no women. Don't you all get lonely?"
"Naw," says one of the locals. "What you do is go out to Farmer Brown's pasture, and find yourself a sheep, and screw it."
Well the new guy is horrified, and leaves. But over time, watching all the locals head out to the pasture, he starts to feel the need for some release. He downs a few shots of whiskey, goes down to the pasture, picks out a sheep, and starts thrusting. When he's finished, he notices the locals staring at him in fear and disgust.
"What are you all looking at me like that for?" he yells. "You've all been fucking sheep for weeks before I got here."
"Yeah, we have," says one of the locals, "but that there's Black Bart's gal."

A man walks into a brothel. He walks up to the proprietor and says: "What can I get for $1?"
The proprietor says: "Go up the stairs and into the room on the right."
The man walks into the room and sits on the bed, when he notices a small door at the bottom of one of the walls. The door opens up, and a chicken comes walking out.
The man figures out what he has to do, and has his way with the chicken.
The chicken is disgusted, and leaves.
The man comes back the next day and says to the proprietor: "I didn't really like that, and I'd like a refund."
The proprietor says: "Oh, good sir, trust me. Go up the stairs, but this time go into the room on the left, and you won't want your dollar back."
So the man goes into the room, and this room is much larger than the other, with theatre-type seating, and a big curtain on one side.
A few people are scattered throughout the seats, and the man sits down. The curtain opens up, and it's actually a plexi-glass window into another room, and the people in the seats are watching an orgy.
The man leans over to a guy sitting next to him and says: "Man, this is something, huh?"
The other guy says: "You should have been here yesterday. Some guy was fucking a chicken."

A 17 year old kid has made repeated trips to a bordello, only to be turned down by the madam for being underage. Each time she tells him he can use a hole in the tree out front to get his rocks off, and he's so horny that he does. Finally, his 18th birthday, and he proudly strides in and is set up with a good looking hooker; once int he room they undress and before he begins he takes a big stick and shoves in into he nether region; she screams "What the hell are you doing?" and he replies "Just checking for squirrels."
OK, not sex with an animal, but the animal still features prominently.

Foreign legion - fort out in the baking desert, 30 miles from the nearest town. The English (of course) colonel eventually gets to feeling itchy and asks the sergeant (a Frenchie of course)....
"erm.... I was wondering old boy. What do the men do to er.... relieve certain er.... physical needs out here in the remote er.... desert?"
"But monsieur Colonel" say the frog, "zey use old Suzette the camel over there..."
"Filthy pig!" shouts the colonel, "you bloody crapauds make me sick" and off he stalks. But he gets to thinking about it and one night, when the moon is high and the desert wind is gently blowing, he sneaks out of his quarters, crosses the empty parade ground (avoiding the gaze of the sentries on the wall), gives the camel a juicy apple, drops his shorts and starts to become amorous.
Up runs the French sergeant. "Sacred blue and merde! What do you do, mon Colonel? Zat is disgoosting".
The colonel is red-faced and hitching up his kaks, expostulating "Good God, man; you said the men use the camel"
"Yes, but zey use the camel to ride into town!"
