Wisconsin dominates 'drunkest cities' list

Wisconsin is well represented on a list of the drunkest cities in the United States. The 24/7 Wall Street report looked at the percentage of adults who report binge or heavy drinking within the past 30 days and the percentage of traffic fatalities where alcohol is a factor.

Of the 380 metro areas that were reviewed for the survey, cities in Wisconsin held the top four spots. Green Bay was listed as the drunkest city in the US with 26.5-percent of adults there reporting that they drink to excess. Green Bay was the only city in the survey were more than half of the local driving deaths - 50.5-percent - involve alcohol.

Eau Claire was the second-drunkest city in the US. Appleton was third. Madison was fourth.

Wisconsin held 10 of the top-20 spots. Also on the list: Oshkosh (6th), Wausau (9th), LaCrosse (10th), Fond du Lac (12th), Sheboygan (15th), and Milwaukee (20th).

The driest city in the United States was Provo, Utah.[the driest city in the US is in Utah...big surprise...]

You need to do something on those long cold nights--Russians (and many former Soviet Republics) rate pretty high on that drinking scale as do Scandinavians (and liquor is pretty heavily taxed there).

and I know that there are many people who can and will kill a six-pack at a tailgate party/Packer game, summer picnic, or just a Saturday night out with friends and consider that to be perfectly normal.  I'm sure the actual numbers are much higher.

A six pack? I know people who could kill a case; one guy I represented in a DUI case had a blood alcohol level of 0.23 (0.08 is legally drunk); he told me he had drunk around 26 or so beers in a 3 hour period. That's around 2 gallons. I'm pretty sure I couldn't drink that much soda, or even water, in 3 hours.

Weelllll, not in those specific words.....

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) considers binge drinking to be:

• The consumption of four or more alcoholic drinks on the same occasion by females at least one day during the month
  The consumption of five or more alcoholic drinks on the same occasion by males at least one day a month
  The consumption of alcohol in a single timeframe that raises one’s blood alcohol concentration to a level of 0.08
      at least one day a month (estimated for most females and males as being the number of drinks listed above)

I do think that we Wisconsinites have a far different view of what constitutes binge drinking than they do, and would look on their markers as calling it quits early.

When it comes to beer there is only one who has been at the top for 26 years - Czech! I call my Czech colleague every year when the Economist booklet of world facts comes out to congratulate him:

In terms of total alcohol Scandinavia is not especially high and if you've been to Norway you know why. The excellent beer there is amazingly expensive. (I've had several of the Haandbryggeriet offerings and wow, they are good)
