Longstanding social disaffection and possible mental illness issues, criminal record for stalking, gets access to guns.
This tune is getting really, really old.
I just spent some time reading the biographies of the victims on The Baltimore Sun page; there are dozens of people devastated tonight and forever, including Maria Hiassen who lost her devoted husband of 33 years on her 58th birthday.
150+ mass shootings so far this year - June 28th.
This country is broken. Period.

So, a sick puppy with a personal grudge, (not ideologically motivated as some had hoped would prove to be the case...)

As the son of a journalist, I’m surprised you’re going there. Really? Does that lessen the import of what he has done? Does it mean we shouldn’t still be concerned about access to weapons and mental health? Or language that normalizes using violence against the press or anyone else with opinions. Read the article linked below - this is the new normal. As is accepting it, so long as it’s not “ideological?” Not in my country, thank you much.

Look, a mental health issue! Clearly, guns and their ready availability played no role in this incident.

Rep. Maxine Waters, whose call for public protests of Trump administration officials has triggered a debate over civility in politics, said Thursday that she has canceled events in Texas and Alabama after a “very serious death threat” made against her.
In a statement reported by CNN, the California Democrat said that after President Trump took aim at her Monday on Twitter, “even more individuals are leaving threatening messages and sending hostile mail to my office.”
“There was one very serious death threat made against me on Monday from an individual in Texas which is why my planned speaking engagements in Texas and Alabama were cancelled this weekend,” Waters said in the statement.
See where this is headed???? Does anyone need to be reminded of the Post’s slogan: “Democracy dies in Darkness.”

Does that lessen the import of what he has done?
Hmm...
Not sure where I suggested or implied that it did...
Five people murdered in cold blood; no doubt as to who is the perpetrator...
Put me down as favoring the death penalty in this case...
My observation was a reaction to the champing at the bit to be able to blame this on Trump and hate whipped up by the "right-wing" I saw among many pundits and commentators on cable news yesterday...
I also noticed that after the motive became public that the amount of coverage dropped
way off, suggesting to me that
I'm not the one who sees the import as lessened...
Rep. Maxine Waters, whose call for public protests of Trump administration officials ...
My my, that's certainly a charitable characterization of what Waters said:
Rep. Maxine Waters claimed the favor of the Almighty during a speech at a Capitol Hill "Keep Families Together" rally on Saturday. She said cabinet members and highly visible Trump enablers should expect harassment at restaurants, gas stations, shopping places, and even their homes until they change their immigration policy. Several have already been confronted at public places.
"Already you have members of your cabinet that are being booed out of restaurants. We have protesters taking up at their house who are saying, 'No peace, no sleep. No peace, no sleep.'"
"We're gonna win this battle," Waters said to the crowd. "Because while you try and quote the Bible, Jeff Sessions and others, you really don’t know the Bible. God is on our side. On the side of the children. On the side of what’s right. On the side of what’s honorable. On the side of understanding that if we can’t protect the children, we can’t protect anybody."
She said that there should be "no sleep, no peace" for the people responsible who are for the separation of children from their parents that was part of the recent "zero tolerance" immigration policy.
Waters finished with a call to action: "If you see anybody from that cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd. You push back on them. Tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere!"

Now, all of that having been pointed out, lest their be any misunderstanding of my position, (inadvertent or intentional) let me stipulate for the record that death threats are always and everywhere wrong, intolerable, and those making them should be criminally prosecuted...
Even when they are made against a complete chuckle-headed idiot of long-standing like Maxine Waters, whose words and actions are doing
nothing but helping to undermine the cause of reigning in and ultimately removing Donald Trump as President...
A cause to which I am
deeply committed...

I’m not suggesting you condone the murder, but my point is not about punishment, it’s about trying to stop this and other similar actions before they happen. Your comments do not aid that effort.

As for Maxine - she is standing up and speaking out. We should all be grateful for that.

I guess we're just going to have to agree to disagree about that...
Because I can't see how her public encouragement of harassing and menacing tactics, (even against people in their own homes) accomplishes
anything other than compromising the claim to the "moral high ground", providing Trump with a ready made diversion, and giving his lying henchmen (and henchwomen) an opportunity to look like victims... (an opportunity they certainly don't deserve, and would never have any other way.)
None of which helps the cause of bringing on board the support needed either for the Dems to take back the House, or to ultimately bring down this criminal Presidency...
So no, I'm afraid I can't be "grateful" for Waters' damaging and counter-productive antics...
Though I can
certainly understand why
wes would be....
And BTW wes:
Waters represents a district in El Lay, not Frisco...
We got enough problems in this burg without being tagged with
her...

That he had a personal grudge does not preclude that he took inspiration from those who have vilified the press and called for acts of violence to be taken against them. In fact, his narrative sounds very much like what the right has been peddling i.e. they "defamed" him (Trump's "fake news") therefore they deserve to be attacked (Yiannopoulos's "vigilante squads").

I have to agree Jim, and will add that I don't understand what Waters hopes to accomplish other than blowing off some steam. Does she really think any administration official will say "So many people are harassing me and have forced me to see the error of my ways; henceforth I shall act differently"?
Scooter--I don't think so; from what I have read, this obsession goes back well before a president Trump was ever even considered to be a possibility.

Yes, he has a longstanding bone to pick with this paper. So why didn't he shoot it up in 2011, or 2013, or 2015?
Look, I am not saying absolutely that there is a link between the ongoing vilification of the press of the past couple of years, and what happened this week. But the fact that it happened now, and not two or three or five years ago, means that such a connection cannot be dismissed out of hand.

The so- called president has declined a request to lower the flags in memory of the Capital Gazette victims. Whose lives matter? Apparently not journalists.
