Beginning a sentence with 'So' or 'I mean'- usually used when answering a question.

Literally, Like (and 'I'm Like'), Basically, Narrative, Rabbit Hole.

Those just came to mind immediately. Watch any interview on CNN, MSNBC, FOX etc. and you'll find plenty of these wasted words and more.

A phrase I've started noticing quite a bit lately is 'Tone Deaf' - which is meant to mean 'clueless'. (No! Not directed at me )

While preparing to post this I heard a commercial where a woman said, 'I'm all about my bed'.

I'm getting old and cranky.

Seamus Heaney began his famous translation of Beowulf with the one word, So.

The Old English is as follows:

“Hwæt! We Gar-Dena in gear-dagum, þeod-cyninga, þrym gefrunon, hu ða æþelingas ellen fremedon!”

And Heaney rendered it thus:

So. The Spear-Danes in days gone by
and the kings who ruled them had courage and greatness.

Heaney's use of So. as the opener was controversial. This piece is worth reading.

Anyway - if it was good enough for Heaney, it's good enough for me.

Interesting. I'm on the same page. If I'm to think outside the box, I find the term "at the end of the day" quite annoying. It seems like everyone on Capital Hill uses it almost daily when stating their political positions. Honestly... I wish they'd get their ducks in a row. And I'd say that's a no-brainer.

What I despise is the use of "orientated" when they mean "oriented".


It is ugly and ignorant. A new one I dislike is "moar" for "more". Everyone who writes "moar" should pass kidney stones until they stop.

Wait until you run across 'smol'... used by m⃥e⃥n⃥t⃥a⃥l⃥ ⃥m⃥i⃥d⃥g⃥e⃥t⃥s⃥ texters to mean little and cute, I guess.
e.g., OMG the new kittens are so smol (and of course followed by an inane emoji/smilie with little hearts for eyes or something like that)

That was one that I was trying to remember. Another one like it is "conversate".

This thread is in my wheelhouse. I mean it's in my lane. I mean I'm really a player in this space.

Where do these things come from? How do they catch on? Is it a group of "they" in a room somewhere that release new catch phrases, words and stupid "I means" to undercover designated people who then release them to the masses?

It's the one-percenters.

A word I think has completely outlived its usefulness is "empower"...(or "empowered" or empowering")

It's used so frequently in so many situations now that it's become completely trivialized and basically meaningless...

Empower has lost it's capacity to be empowering...


Another one that has become really over-used is "transactional"...

I'm guilty of using that one myself; it's become a seductive short-hand for referring to any relationship that isn't based on something substantive (principle, affinity for, philosophical agreement, etc.)

If I were to never hear or see that word in print again that would suit me just fine...

Then there is the overuse of the word "powerful" in advertising. It's used a lot by people who want you to pay them to manage your finances and in infomercials for food supplements.

"If you come to our free luncheon and presentation, we will show you how you can use our powerful tools to make huge amounts of money in the market even when all of the markets have crashed and the entire world has gone into a depression!!!"

and

"We will send you a free bottle of our exclusively marketed natural infused starfish sperm that contains powerful micro-nutrients that will make a 65 year old man strong, handsome and attractive to beautiful 24 year old women!!"
