‘Hamilton’: Medical emergency sets off active shooter scare at SF performance

Cast and audience evacuated at Opheum Theater in San Francisco

A medical emergency at the Orpheum Theater in San Francisco triggered an alarm about a potential active shooter during a performance of the hit musical “Hamilton,” leading the audience to evacuate.

There was no shooter, and the evacuation was set off by a woman’s unspecified medical emergency about 9:50 p.m. Friday, said Officer Joseph Tomlinson, a spokesman for the San Francisco Police Department.

“There was a woman that had a medical emergency, and while that was happening there was gunfire in the performance and the crowd, for whatever reason, connected the two, thought there was a shooter,” Tomlinson said.

The woman was transported to a hospital with a life-threatening condition, he said. Three other people were injured when the audience started evacuating, including one with a broken leg and two others with moderate injuries, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.

A defibrillator was pulled during the emergency, which set off an alarm, helping lead to an “un-organized rapid exit of the theater,” the fire department said on Twitter.

Photos and videos shared on social media by audience members show people standing outside the theater while police cars arrive. Tomlinson said a police officer working during the play was approached by audience members about a possible shooter, and that officer called in the threat.

Tomlinson said he does not know if the play ended or if the show went on following the medical emergency.[It didn't]

Never yell "Defibrillator" in a crowded theater.

But it's OK to yell "Defibrillator" in a crowded hockey rink.

Sounds so much more dignified than "panicked stampede", doesn't it?

Was there any kind of penalty called on this play -- icing or offsides, or something?

Delay of game and unsportsmanlike conduct.
