Officials: Woman dies after falling into meat grinder in 'horrible accident'

A Pennsylvania woman is dead after falling into a meat grinder at a processing plant.

WNEP reports it happened Monday at Economy Locker Storage Company in Muncy Township.

Officials said that Jill Greninger, 35, fell into the machinery just before noon.

Authorities told ABC News Greninger was found by a coworker after workers began hearing strange noises coming from the commercial machine.

Firefighters spent about 45 minutes disassembling the large machine in an effort to recover the woman’s remains.

Lycoming County coroner Charles Kiessling Jr. said the woman may have been standing on a set of wheeled stairs before the incident. He told the Williamsport Sun-Gazette it was a "horrible accident."

"This is just a tragedy," Kiessling said. "She died inside the moving parts of the machine."

Witnesses are not sure exactly how Greninger ended up in the machine.

"I don't know if she got caught with the moving parts and they pulled her in, or if she just slipped and fell," Kiessling said, "I don't know and there's no way of determining that."

Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigators are still looking into what caused Greninger's death.

"My heart goes out to everyone who is affected by this. Everyone is shaken and thinks that this is a tragedy that something like this had to happen to such a young lady," one neighbor said.

Obviously, she got a little behind in her work.

Do you think the USDA has a grading scale for this?

Tragic illustration of why people don't enjoy the daily grind

We have a President who seems to have no normal standards of decency or compassion, which is one of the reasons I oppose him so vehemently.

I'm not the owner/operator of this board but I think I have a sense of humo(u)r. I don't see anything in this tragic story worth levity. I hope that's not just me.

It’s a horrific sevent. Humor is also a common response to horrific events.

Are the jokes in poor taste most definitely and nobody expects them to be taken seriously.

It’s called gallows humor

Personally I think she was trying to get an up close view of how the sausage is made.

A few days ago, my grandson (who is 20-something-or-other) had a work accident; a hand crushed in a plastics mold. I was and am horrified at the pain he must have experienced and still is. The surgeons must be trusted to do what they can to restore his hand and we hope there will be no long-lasting physical problems.

After the "Oh no" and more acceptable comments of that nature, I said to my wife, "Just like his father, that boy'd do anything to go home early".

I was seriously injured in a lab accident (serious acid burns in an explosion), and when my colleague was driving me to the hospital the first thing I said was "I knew I didn't want to work today". Gallows humor can sound cruel, but it is a way of dealing with something that is otherwise difficult to address. I'd rather laugh than cry.

Thank you for saying that, Andy. I agree, but hesitated to say anything. I think some tragic deaths are just too horribly gruesome to support any humor.
