dales, when my ex-BIL was VP/Intermodal for Norfolk Southern, every few years the top echelons and Board of Directors of NS -- and their families -- would be encouraged to go on a ten day, round trip, sight-seeing vacation from Virginia Beach to Ogden on a luxury train pulled by a fully restored Class J 611 (sometimes diesel assisted.) Needless to say, all on board were treated like royalty.
However, over the last few years, due to scheduling logistics, similar trips have been scrubbed by AmTrak who now control the rails. Long distance, nostalgic, railroad trips ain't what they used to be.
Oh, well, no biggie -- BIL left NS, and my sister, in 2000.

RayThom……
My late dad was a hardcore railfan. A little rubbed off on me.
Most of my passenger train riding was pre-Amtrak.
He belonged to a railroad organization (one of many) called Central Coast Railroad Club. They had their own private observation car which they used when they went on excursions (steam of course) throughout CA. Many memories of the 1950's/early 1960's spent riding the rails.
Also spent some time riding narrow gauge steam powered logging railroads.
Glad there's at least one here who longs for the days of railroading at its finest.

Count me among them. I have been known to part with some of my hard-earned money on various occasions to help preserve "Big Alice the Goon" (CB&Q 4000),
which has been on static display in my hometown since the early 1960s.
