New study on what triggers ice ages.

"“What surprised me is how much of this increased storage can be attributed to physical changes alone, with Antarctic sea-ice cover being the key player,” Marzocchi said. Just the physical effects, before accounting for changes from biological growth, account for about half the drawdown in carbon dioxide that is thought to have happened.

The results are another step toward understanding how the Earth’s climate works over long time scales, the scientists said.

“The ocean is the largest carbon reservoir over geological timescales,” Marzocchi said. “So studying the role that the ocean plays in the carbon cycle helps us more accurately simulate future environmental change.”"

Yes - based on what I've read (I don't have access to the original paper) it looks like an interesting study. Poke a hole in the climate somewhere and effects pop up somewhere else. That concept really isn't novel but the details here (more antarctic ice ==> less carbon exchange with N Atlantic waters ==> more sequestration of carbon ==> lowering of CO2 ==> cooler temps in N hemisphere ==> increased possibility of an Ice Age) are novel.

Thanks for posting Darren. I'm not sure what point you were making but of course it's interesting to see how details of how a subtle small change can, over a period of 2.5 million years, lead to larger changes.

This shows one of the reasons climate scientist have gone from talking about 'global warming' to 'climate change.' The British Isles and parts of N Europe will become cooler as overall GHG increases force a change in the Gulf Stream which keeps the climate in UK and much of Scandinavia reasonably temperate.

Again, thanks for posting. It's always nice to see science being respected.
