Millions more people will be waking to harsher coronavirus restrictions on Boxing Day when new tier changes come into force in England.

New lockdowns are set to be introduced in Scotland and Northern Ireland, while restrictions that were eased for Christmas Day in Wales will be reimposed on Saturday.

Those in the strict tier 4 in England will increase by 6 million to 24 million people, representing 43% of the population, in response to a more transmissible variant being discovered in the UK.

It comes after the government said a further 570 died within 28 days of testing positive for the virus as of Christmas Day, taking the UK’s total deaths within 28 days of a positive test to 70,195.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies for deaths where Covid-19 has been mentioned on the death certificate, together with additional data on deaths that have occurred in recent days, show there have now been 86,000 deaths involving Covid-19 in the UK.

There were also 32,725 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK, bringing to 244,146 the number of positive tests in the past seven days.

People keep asking "Is COVID-19 really that serious?"

Look at this way.   Casinos and churches are both closed.

When Heaven and Hell agree on the same thing, it's probably pretty serious.

On a per-vehicle basis, motorcyclists have a 0.06% fatality (99.94% survival) rate.
On a per-mile basis, motorcyclists have a 0.0025% fatality (99.9975% survival) rate.
Much better than 0.5% fatality/99.5% survival.

Oh sure, but what about when you put 200 people on a motorcycle, Mr. Smartypants? What THEN?

In case you didn't know the first of a kind COVID vaccine with mRNA uses a different approach to activate the autoimmune system. Keep in mind the same B & T cells are what wreak havoc in autoimmune diseases.

As for doctors saying it's OK, they might as well be used car salesmen given the limited testing.

I see you're still here and posting, Darren.   Ready to make good on your bet(s) yet?   It's a great way to start out the New Year — guilt-free and knowing that you have shown yourself to be a man whose word can be trusted (at least in some small way, that is).

And if not now, when?   Or are we going to have to wait until Trump croaks and there's absolutely no way that he can ever re-occupy the White House?

Still grasping at straws, are you?  If you had been on the Titanic, you probably would have gone back to bed because "after all, someone said this boat was unsinkable."

OK, I can wait a little longer.  I'll expect a PM from you by January 8th.

I take it you're not familiar with the fact that state constitutions assign certain powers concerning elections only to the legislature. The state executive branches and officials do not have that power. Separation of powers comes to mind.

That's one issue.

Others exist.

Have you been following the legislative hearings?

Blah blah hocus pocus. Joe Biden will be sworn in on 1/20/21, because that’s what the Constitution requires. Those who claim otherwise are liars and traitors.

Yeah, I've been following that.  You posted a Youtube clip from human rights attorney and so-called Constitutional expert Leigh Dumbass.  What I got out of the video is that — according to her — the state legislatures determine how elections are to be run.

Remember, though — this is NOT just a state election; this is a NATIONAL election in which the voters are tasked with selecting the President and Vice President of the United States, not just a county board member, a delegate to the state legislature, or even the state's representative(s) to Congress. So if Texas decides that they want to select their governor or senators by how hot they make their chili, for example, then I guess they have the right to do just that.  But when it comes to a NATIONAL election, the elected representatives of the entire CONGRESS of the entire NATION are the determinant factor.

I also almost had a Pepsi-syndrome moment when she said that if the Founding Fathers "granted one body of government a chance to weigh in this way and another body a chance to weigh in in another, they would be setting up a tug-of-war" that would never be resolved — so it's OK to let ONE MAN (Pence, or whoever the Veep might be the next time) make the decision?  Funny, I thought that's what the Revolution was fighting AGAINST — that is, letting one man (back then it was King George) make all the decisions.

She also forgot that in Constitutional terms, shall = must, as in "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." (that's the First Amendment, in case you'd forgotten)

So to recap —
First the Republicans try to throw out mail-in or absentee balloting, after this had already been approved by various state legislatures.  Strike one.  And what made this even more funny was that Trump and Pence themselves both cast mail-in/absentee ballots.  Honestly, no serious writer would even TRY to make up stuff like that!

So then they try to say that counting is supposed to stop at midnight of election day and any ballots received after that don't count, even though various state legislatures had said that as long as a ballot was postmarked by or on election day it would be considered valid.  Strike two.

And then they tried to say that sending out (unsolicited) mail-in ballots TO REGISTERED VOTERS rather than forcing them to vote in person and put their lives at risk IN THE MIDDLE OF A FUCKING PANDEMIC THAT HAS KILLED ALMOST 300000 AMERICANS was some sort of a violation.  This got thrown out of the courts, and rightly so.  Strike three.

So then they try to challenge the makeup of the electoral voters that were selected, and got THAT thrown out/laughed out of the courts as well.  Strike four?

And now this?  Judas priest, how many strikes do you think you get before you're finally out??   You aren't Bluto, this isn't Animal House, and it's over when the RULES, not you, say it's over.   And it's pretty clear to most people that it's over and anything else is little more than air and noise coming out of a whoopee cushion.

So on Jan. 6th, Pence will take his position as the presiding officer of a session of Congress to count the electoral votes, as set forth in the Twelfth Amendment. The votes will be counted, and Pence will have to do his duty to honestly report the count. Texas representative Gohmert can make his grandstand play from the floor. and then the rest of the provisions of the Twelfth Amendment will come into force.  But when the final showdown comes and it's time for Gohmert to put his cards on the table and play his hand, he will be found to only have a four-card flush ... which has never yet, in any poker game I've ever played in, won a pot.

And then, as Guin said, Biden will be sworn in on Jan. 20th, Trump can go to whichever one of his golf courses will have him, and the country can get on with recovering from four years of typical Trumpian bluster, bloviation, bald-faced lies, and various other forms of misdemeanor, misbehavior, and mismanagement.

And speaking of Trump's golf courses and mismanagement, Trump's Scottish course (Turnberry, in Ayrshire) has filed documents with the UK government revealing £2.3 million ($3.1 million) in losses for 2019, the 6th consecutive year of losses since Trump took over in 2014. The six-year total is a whopping £19.66 million (or $26.8 million). And since these figures only go to the end of 2019, he can't even blame the losses on Brexit or the coronavirus.

The Animal House comparison is more appropriate than you know. As you said this is a national election. I'll add there are federal requirements to be met.

Did the states and local entities comply with the law?

While no judge has gone through the evidence when requested but instead dismissed the case, many others have in their official capacity. Like the reviewers in the grandstand during the parade in Animal House the world will go topsy turvey for many.

As an aside the frat house in Animal House belongs to my fraternity last I checked. Your crystal ball came to life momentarily.
