Day 8 in the countdown to an end to the COVID-19 panic.

Post by Darren »

More good news.

"(OMNS Apr 4, 2020) Recent research suggests that a compound called 'sulforaphane' may have both a prophylactic and curative benefit against ARDS and SARS-CoV-2. Sulforaphane is found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and kale. It is generated by damage to the plant and is involved in protecting the plant from insect predators. In mammals it activates the Nrf2 anti-inflammatory pathway, is a potent anti-bacterial agent, and has anti-cancer properties. Recent research shows that it can modulate epigenetic pathways in mammalian cells. [1]"

It's still working.

"IMPORTANT UPDATE (April 3): In an exclusive interview, Dr. Zelenko provides a major update about the results of his COVID-19 patients: 700 coronavirus patients treated with 99.9% success rate using Hydroxychloroquine, 1 outpatient died after not following protocol.

Last Wednesday, we published the success story from Dr. Vladimir Zelenko, a board-certified family practitioner in New York, after he successfully treated 350 coronavirus patients with 100 percent success using a cocktail of drugs: hydroxychloroquine, in combination with azithromycin (Z-Pak), an antibiotic to treat secondary infections, and zinc sulfate. Dr. Zelenko said he saw the symptom of shortness of breath resolved within four to six hours after treatment."

Numbers like that only fool the extremely gullible. 99.9% and only missed the perfect score due to patient error?

Credulous much?

What happened next is a modern pandemic parable that illustrates how the coronavirus is colliding with our fragile information ecosystem: a jumble of facts, falsehoods and viral rumors patched together from Twitter threads and shards of online news, amplified by armchair experts and professional partisans and pumped through the warp-speed accelerator of social media...

...The source was Dr. Vladimir Zelenko, 46, a mild-mannered family doctor with offices near the village. Since early March, his clinics had treated people with coronaviruslike symptoms, and he had developed an experimental treatment consisting of an antimalarial medication called hydroxychloroquine, the antibiotic azithromycin and zinc sulfate.

After testing this three-drug cocktail on hundreds of patients, some of whom had only mild or moderate symptoms when they arrived, Zelenko claimed that 100% of them had survived the virus with no hospitalizations and no need for a ventilator...

...In New York’s tight-knit Hasidic community, Zelenko’s sudden fame has caused tensions. Shortly after he posted on YouTube, a group of village officials wrote an open letter pleading with him to stop. They said he had exaggerated the extent of the coronavirus outbreak in Kiryas Joel, using a small sample of his patients to predict that as many as 90% of village residents would get the virus...

...“Anyone who tells you these drugs work, or don’t work, is not basing that view on science,” said David Juurlink, head of the division of clinical pharmacology at the University of Toronto. “There’s reason to be optimistic, and there’s also reason to be pessimistic.”

In an exclusive interview with former New York Mayor, Rudy Giuliani...
Yes, because if I had a legitimate scientific discovery, the one person in the world that I would choose help me share it with the world would be Rudy Giuliani.

More good news although older. Teva along with Mylan is increasing production.

"Additional production of hydroxychloroquine sulfate tablets is being assessed and subsequently ramped up with materials that are being sent to Teva from its ingredient supplier.

The Israeli company will ship six million tablets through wholesalers to hospitals by March 31, and more than 10 million within a month.

Teva has said that it is also actively looking across its range of products to determine if the company can help to provide any other products that may be relevant in addressing acute and substantial need during the COVID-19 crisis."

Lower death projects are good news!

"Another important point: due to a lack of testing kits (which should be resolved in the next few weeks), the total number of those who have contracted COVID-19 is much higher, as most COVID-19 infections are mild or not even felt by patients. Our ability to learn from Italy (and maybe from China) has allowed us to develop treatment strategies that weren’t even considered just 6 weeks ago. These findings should make our death rate lower than other parts of the world. "

"There is mass confusion with regard to the statistics and the media has utilized this to bring fear and panic to the population. Statistics on who has been exposed, who has it, who is seriously ill with it and what are projected numbers of deaths have been incredibly wrong. In Great Britain, the apocalypse warning of over 200,000 deaths by some experts has recently been downgraded to 20,000. Much of the public health modelling is based on Chinese data which is completely unreliable – communist governments consistently lie about their situations. Italy has more reliable data but we can’t say we are going the way of Italy. Their healthcare system is third world medicine with good pasta, red wine, and gelato. Italy has one of the highest rates of elderly in Europe – prime targets for the disease as they like to smoke and drink. Also, northern Italy is home to the highest concentration of Chinese in Europe. Travel to and from China sparked the outbreak there."

Italy's health care is consistently rated in the top 5 in the world, unlike the U.S. which ranks in the 30s, somewhere between Cuba and Uruguay.

And once again, a death rate of 10% of 10 million confirmed cases and a death rate of 1% over 100 million cases of which 90 million were undiagnosed, is still 1,000,000 deaths. Changing the denominator doesn't mean that less people die.

Let's look at the purveyors of this nonsense:
The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) is a politically conservative non-profit association founded in 1943. It is opposed to the Affordable Care Act and other forms of socialized medicine. The group was reported to have about 4,000 members in 2005, and 5,000 in 2014. The executive director is Jane Orient, an internist and a member of the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine. AAPS also publishes the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons (formerly known as the Medical Sentinel).

The association is generally recognized as politically conservative or ultra-conservative, and its publication advocates a range of scientifically discredited hypotheses, including the belief that HIV does not cause AIDS, that being gay reduces life expectancy, that there is a link between abortion and breast cancer, and that there is a causal relationship between vaccines and autism.
Oh yeah, sounds like exactly whom I'd want to be turning to for expert knowledge on how to address a pandemic.

Yeah of course that's true...

Especially with the new deaths in this country having reached the level of having a 9/11 every two-three days any news like that is good (so long as one keeps it in proper perspective, which you obviously do not; in fact destroying the perspective between the balance of good news and bad appears to be your goal)

And remember, each and and every one of these deaths represents a full life snuffed out; a lifetime of hopes and accomplishments, good times and bad, people left behind who grieve; lives every bit as important and valuable as yours...

Each one with their own personal life tale, (or as you so callously put it, "sob story")

With six and a half hours still left on the GMT clock for the day (and inevitable upward adjustments as additional info reports in, after the end of the day:
April 5 (GMT)

16491 new cases and 873 new deaths in the United States
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

873 brand new sob stories...

So again, sure, lower death "projections" are "good news"...

But of course the rates of actual deaths occurring in real time, not so much...

Look for bad news, feed your fear. Look for the light, see the Sun!

"PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) - A local veteran is celebrating two big milestones this week. Not only is he turning 104, but he's also celebrating his recovery from coronavirus.

William Lapschies lives at the Edward C. Allworth Oregon Veterans’ Home in Lebanon. He was one of at least 15 residents to tested positive for the virus last month.

Two residents at the home have since died.

William, who was diagnosed with coronavirus at the beginning of March, was very sick and after eight days took a turn for the worse. His family says they thought he might not make it.

His family says that doctors tried a couple of things - including using hydroxychloroquine - a drug used to treat malaria. Now, they say he has made a 'wonderful recovery' and continues to get better every day.

They are hoping William's story will bring hope to those who test positive for coronavirus or know someone who has.

"We're hoping this goes out to all the people out there who are sick and have this problem, if Bill can survive this at 104, anybody can. Step up, you can do it," said Jim Brown, William's son-in-law.

They also want to praise the staff at the veterans home for showing so much love and compassion during these challenging times.

When asked how he feels on his 104th birthday, William responded, "Pretty good. I made it." "
