Who here used to post on Cartalk and The Chat House?

Post by Darren »

I've lost track of lots of people. Some are on FB.

I know LJ, Guin, Joe Guy, Rubato, RayThom and Sue U go back to those days.

Who else?
Thank you RBG wherever you are!

Me. I originally went onto Car Talk with a question (I was on my way to Khobar, Saudi Arabia - hence the name) re mothballing my car for two or three years, and I got hooked onto the Rant and Rave board which was mostly about politics. That was in the far off days of that notable statesman, GW Bush. Then we moved to a board whose name I forget but that was closed down because someone managed to suss out the inner workings of the board. Then if I recall correctly we migrated to Smitty's (Tess Smith's board) which morphed into Le Chat House of sad memory.

Yes, I was one of those.  I first snuck into the Café d'Arte (the 'official' name of the Car Talk board) around the time of Princess Diana's untimely demise.  A few of us also made side trips onto the Cyber Soap Box (CSB) while traveling the long and winding road that led us here.  That might be the one whose name ex-kA was unable to recall.

And here's some goodies from the late Car Talk board, including the (in)famous Chicken Thread, archived by Cat Lady: .

I wouldn't be using this handle if I hadn't started on the Car Talk board and never bothered to change it. (I haven't actually owned an Econoline van since 2004, shortly after I bought a Dodge [Mercedes] Sprinter.)

Similarly, MGMcAnick...though he still has at least 1 MG which he is currently mcanicking.

Oh, and I think the other MGM (MajGenl.Meade) started out there, too.

I posted a little and read a lot more at Le Chat House, and was at CSB for ~5 years until we all migrated here.

Just for shits and giggles I just typed cybersoapbox in the old Google machine and check out this archived page I found:

http://www.cybersoapbox.com/members.htm

I didn’t find much else. Whatever did happen to Gar and the plans for a revamped CSB?

This link has many names that I have nearly forgotten. It was kind of fun walking down memory lane.

Bicycle Bill has the distinction of posting the first response to my very first post on the Cartalk Rant & Rave...

It was a rant against the reckless and illegal Friday rush-hour mass bike rider (I called them "spoke heads") protests running all over the streets of downtown San Francisco...

Bill posted some rubbish trying to defend them... 8-)

Man!  That was waaayy back in the day.  Has it really been that long that I've been trying to talk some sense into you? :rsp

Seriously, though, don't you wish that something like that was the worst problem we would have to bicker about, instead of what we are currently facing these days?

I joined Cartalk back in 1997 or 1998, and went to more than a couple FtFs. In fact I've met Lord Jim in person, in San Francisco. I think he's the only holdover from Cafe Darte that's here now I've met in person.

Some of the old Cafe Darters I've met were Duck, Wrangler, Ratbert, Dorothy... several others in the bay area I don't remember. It's been over 20 years since those happened. My Mom used to be on there too and met up with some folks. I Talked to Bones on the phone when I was in Atlanta back in 1999, still FB friends with him.

Lots of old names in those links. Kind of miss jay (yes, I do self-flagellate and no, rubato, my sex life is not "wierd" but perfectly lamron.

Yeah, I was on the Cafe, CSB, Smitty, then here. Or was Smitty's the one that they wouldn't let me join? Or perhaps, rejoin. Sensible people those.

Who was that guy who lived up near the Finger Lakes? One of my favorite reads.

At one point I think there was some confusion that the other MGM and I might be one-and-the-same. Obviously we're not.

I was on Cafe Dart're shortly after we got an internet capable confuser. I'm going to guess it was about 1996. I'd been a fan of Click and Clack for many years, and went to their website with a question. Later I answered MANY car questions from other people. YouTube has all but replaced Car Talk for car questions. Their website has changed a lot, fairly recently.

I don't know how I migrated to Le Chat House, but you all know how I got here.

The handle MG McAnick (With the space) came from (now) almost 53 years of MG ownership. At last count, I have eight of the "wee beasties". (A line from Brigadoon IIRC) Yes, getting my feet in and out of one can be difficult. I actually twisted wrenches on MGs, and other weird furrin cars, for a living in my misspent youth.

I signed up for CSB, but never liked it much.
