It Feels Like the End Times

Post by BoSoxGal »

A mass shooting in Canada - and not just Canada, but beautiful, tranquil, small town Nova Scotia.
'In excess of 10 people' killed, including RCMP officer, in shooting rampage
Cst. Heidi Stevenson died while responding to an active shooter incident; a second officer has been taken to hospital
about 2 hours ago By: HalifaxToday Staff

RCMP say one of their own is included among at least 10 victims of shooting rampage in rural Nova Scotia this weekend.

At a news conference Sunday evening, RCMP Commanding Officer Lee Bergerman confirmed Cst. Heidi Stevenson, a 23-year member of the force, died while responding to an active shooter incident earlier today.

"Heidi answered the call of duty and lost her life while protecting those she served," said Bergerman.

Officer Stevenson was a wife, mother of two, and had previously served as a community liaison officer with Halifax District RCMP.

A second RCMP officer has been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They have not been identified by officials.

"He and his family will be supported and we will be alongside him as he begins his road to recovery," said Bergerman.

Chief Superintendent Chris Leather said Mounties received multiple 911 reports Saturday evening and were called to a residence in Portapique late Saturday night. Responding officers found several casualties inside and outside of a home.

"This is an extremely difficult day for the RCMP and for the families who have been affected by these tragedies," said Nova Scotia RCMP’s Criminal Operations Officer Chief Superintendent Chris Leather.

Leather added there are multiple victims at several locations "scattered across the province."

"In excess of 10 people have been killed, but the investigation is still ongoing and I expect to have more details in that regard in the coming days," Leather said.

"We're not fully aware of what that total may be because, as we're standing here, the investigation continues in areas that we've not yet explored across the province," he added.

At this time, other news sources are reporting 13 total deaths.

RCMP confirmed the suspected gunman, 51-year-old Gabriel Wortman, is deceased. He is the sole suspect and RCMP say they cannot speak to his motivations at this time.

"We are in the early stages of an incredibly detailed and complex investigation," said Leather.

As is protocol when a person dies in police custody, the incident has been referred to the Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT).

Nova Scotia's premier is describing the active shooter situation as "one of the most senseless acts of violence in our province's history."

Stephen McNeil ended his Sunday COVID-19 update by calling this a "devastating day."

"It's okay to be sad, it's okay to be angry and it's okay to feel helpless, but what's not okay is to bear all of those feelings alone," he said.

The premier is encouraging Nova Scotians to reach out to friends, family and neighbours, or to call the provincial crisis line at 1-888-429-8167, which is toll-free.

"What happened here in our province is not who we are," McNeil said. "It may change us a little, but it can not define us."

"We are strong, we are community-minded and we take care of each other, so let's do that now. Let's do that together."

Yeah, this was horrible. While it was ongoing, police were telling people to shelter in their basements.

I hope the casualty numbers don’t rise much higher.

I just read another article online with comments from people who have known him in the past and more recently; they were all utterly shocked.

It doesn't seem like this guy had a history of mental illness.

I'm betting an autopsy is going to reveal he had an undiagnosed malignant tumor of the cerebral cortex.

Latest death toll on this is being reported at 16...

The cops are still looking for possible additional stops this madman might have made with more casualties...

He started with his ex-wife and her new boyfriend, so it looks like a domestic on steroids - the guy clearly had tons of pent up toxic masculinity.

Before you men start attacking me, please note there is a difference between toxic and healthy masculinity and my comments are not an attack on all men. Hopefully none of you subscribe to the kill-your-ex-lover school of masculinity.

Is there such a thing as "toxic femininity"?

Yes, definitely. And toxic feminism.

eta: Although toxic femininity and feminism are rarely manifested in violence, while toxic masculinity is often manifested in violence. This is a tragedy that victimizes boys and men just as it victimizes girls and women; it would be lovely for all of us if we could find the way to heal it.

I'm curious.  Could you provide a couple examples of what might be considered 'toxic feminism' ?

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Any feminist model that advocates broad hatred of men is the most obvious. Any feminist model that denigrates a woman’s choice to stay home with her children even when that is a freely made choice when said woman has other options (this can be problematic because women lack support for balancing motherhood with academic and career pursuits in this and most other societies, but you get the drift).

Maybe better to shift this larger discussion to another thread if someone wants to start one.

Death toll in Nova Scotia now at 16. I see LJ already reported that, oops.

Schlafly was definitely toxic, but I wouldn't associate her with feminism of any stripe.

Death toll up to 19; they think they’ve found all the crime scenes but as there were structure fires there might still be more bodies?

Now it’s 23. +

I gather he drove around for hours and pulled over random people in his fake police car and uniform and executed them roadside. At least that’s how some of them died. Some were his neighbors.
