The silliness continues unabated.Eskimo Pie company vows change, calls branding derogatory
Hearst Television Published 4:49 pm PDT, Friday, June 19, 2020
The company behind the Eskimo Pie brand is vowing to change the name of the ice cream bar.
Reuters reported the brand's name and marketing would change. The announcement comes as several brands are making changes in response to concerns over racism.
"We are committed to being a part of the solution on racial equality, and recognize the term is derogatory,” Elizabell Marquez, a marketing head with the brand's parent company, Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream, told news outlets.
"This move is part of a larger review to ensure our company and brands reflect our people values," she said.
The word has been noted for its racist history, even though the treat has been around since the early 1920s.
Other brands have made similar moves recently.
Quaker Oats announced Wednesday that it will retire the Aunt Jemima brand, saying the company recognizes the character’s origins are “based on a racial stereotype.”

So, because you are 50 or so years behind the curve in recognizing the word for the derogatory slur that it is, makes this "silly"?
Are you still calling people krauts, kikes and gooks?

What a silly little man you are.
ETA: Eskimo means fish-eater and I know it can be construed as a derogatory term
Perhaps they should change the name to "Inuit Pie" instead, eh?

Next we better change the name for fudge because the word has the potential to be used in many insulting and unflattering ways.
Bye-Bye American (Eskimo) Pie?
How about "Indigenous Circumpolar Peoples" Pies?

Isn't it convenient not to care about using a race/ethnicity as a punch line because we know it will never happen to us.

Next on the hit list?

After all, if "Song of the South" is so racist and abhorrent that it must be locked away never to be seen or even mentioned again except as a prime example of hateful thinking and ignorant behavior (or is it ignorant thinking and horrid behavior? I never can keep them straight!), then I suppose that any of the characters from that story must be bearing that same evil taint as well.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

How about, "Snowflake Pie"?
Maybe they'll try Polar Pie which will only annoy white bears and people who don't like the advertizing slogan - "buy Polar Pie"

For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

I wonder which white middle-class snowflake complained that some people he's never met, and will never meet, may possibly be offended by the name?

You know, gal, I think some day you should look up the difference between "racist" and "prejudiced". Although people tend to use them interchangeably, they do not have the same meaning. Someone can be prejudiced against someone or some group without being racist/homophobic/a member of Antifa/whatever. And you, as a lawyer — present or former, I don't care — should know that.

Re: Bye-Bye American (Eskimo) Pie?
Intentionally choosing to continue using racist terminology when their derogatory nature is known, pretty sure that's textbook racist.

Re: Bye-Bye American (Eskimo) Pie?

Is it OK to still call this a Baked Alaska?
Or do we have to change it to a "Baked (whatever word the native Iñupiat, Yupik, Aleut, Eyak, Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, or other indigenous-to-the-area Athabascan peoples called that particular geographic locality)"?

Is this level of dumbass fuckwit an act? What I mean is, do you have to work at it, or is it a product of the fact that your family decided dozens of generations ago that brother-sister marriages were the preferred pairing to produce children of the desired degree of idiocy?

Re: Bye-Bye American (Eskimo) Pie?
To quote George Carlin: "There are no bad words. Bad thoughts. Bad intentions. And woooords."
What makes a perfectly good word — like mulatto, for example, a Spanish loan-word to describe someone who has one white parent and one black parent — so abhorrent that we dare not even utter it? Why do we have to tap-dance our way through a minefield when we try to describe an ethnic or racial group? You dassn't dare call anyone who is descended from the people who were here to meet the Mayflower 'redskins' or even 'Indians', and if you try to use the name for their particular tribal identity you need a Jeopardy champion's memory to keep them all straight. No wonder we have already skipped past "Native Americans" and are currently defaulting to "indigenous peoples". 'Negro' is out. 'Colored' is also a no-no (even though the NAACP uses the word in their name). And don't even consider using the word 'nigger'.
And while I'm on my little soapbox, just what is it that makes a word like "nigger" absolutely, totally forbidden to persons of one background but OK for person of another? As a male of European ancestry I'm not permitted to use the word the word under any circumstance — in fact, I don't believe I'm allowed to even THINK of the word any more, but someone who has an overabundance of melanin in their skin can use the hell out of it — as an epithet, as a greeting, as a alternative word for close personal friends, it makes no never mind. Seriously, that's like saying that only a Jew can refer to himself as a 'kike' or a 'Hebe', or only Germans get to call themselves 'Krauts'.
Or is this just the next step on our way to Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty-Four"? We're already turning history into propaganda, so now it must be time to step up the indoctrination and subjugation (oops, almost said slavery!) of the people and accelerate the implementation of the American version of Newspeak.
Scooter, you need to move south ASAP. I'm afraid you've been outside playing hockey without a helmet in those cold Canadian winters too long, and it has permanently affected your brain.Scooter wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 5:37 pmIs this level of dumbass fuckwit an act? They call themselves Inuits not Eskimo. And besides, it is only disrespectful if they say so. Has anyone asked them or is this just racism of a different kind, pretending to.speak for them? “Poor little fellows, too cold to think for themselves”

Re: Bye-Bye American (Eskimo)
Eskimo is a European misnomer for Inuit. It is not racist, it is just wrong, like calling Ethiopia Abyssinia.
Pseudo liberals having worked themselves into a good lather of anti -racism need to find new people to hate ( like the recent bizarre attacks on jk Rowling). Since Scandinavians are entitled not to object to the Minnesota Vikings name Inuits are entitled not to object to this;

The Inuit Circumpolar Council adopted "Inuit" as an umbrella term in 1977, although the Yupik of Alaska and Siberia have resisted it because it bears no relationship to their language. Unsurprisingly, they prefer to call themselves Yupik.
