A Public Lashing is Appropriate

Muslim customer files discrimination complaint after barista in Target store writes 'ISIS' on her cup

A Muslim woman in St. Paul, Minn., has filed a discrimination complaint against Target after she said a barista at an in-store coffee shop allegedly wrote "ISIS" on her drink order instead of her name.

The 19-year-old woman - who asked to be identified by only her first name, Aishah, out of fear for her safety - said she was wearing a hijab and face mask when she ordered a beverage July 1 at the Starbucks inside the St. Paul-Midway Target. She repeated her name slowly and multiple times to the barista, according to Jaylani Hussein, executive director of Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, who provided The Washington Post with a copy of the complaint filed Monday with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights.

But when her drink was ready, the acronym for the terrorist group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria had been written on the cup. Aishah raised the issue with a supervisor, but Hussein said her grievance was dismissed. The cafe's supervisor told her, "Mistakes sometimes happen with customers' names," according to the complaint.

"There is absolutely no way she [the barista] could have heard it as 'ISIS'," Aishah told CNN. "Aishah is not an unknown name and I repeated it multiple times."

She said she was given a new drink and a $25 gift card before being escorted out by store security.

Target in a statement said it was "very sorry for this guest's experience at our store" and said representatives "immediately apologized to her when she made our store leaders aware of the situation."

"We have investigated the matter and believe that it was not a deliberate act but an unfortunate mistake that could have been avoided with more clarification," the statement continued. "We're taking appropriate actions with the team member, including additional training, to ensure this does not occur again."

A Starbucks representative declined to comment but confirmed the employees involved worked for Target and not Starbucks.

Hussein said Target's apology doesn't go far enough.

"This is a visibly identifiable Muslim woman. She speaks fluent English without an accent. She has a name that's commonly known and known how to spell," Hussein said in a phone interview. CAIR has asked Target to fire the 16-year-old barista who took the order and the cafe's supervisor.

The term ISIS, he said, is sometimes used by middle- and high-school age children as a racial slur around the Twin Cities, which has a large East African and Somali Muslim population. Six Minnesotans ages 19 to 21 were arrested in 2015 trying to join the terrorist group.

Since then, a mosque in Bloomington, Minn., was bombed and others have been defaced by vandals. In 2016, a gunman shot two Muslim men on their way to their mosque for Ramadan prayers.

"Target should know better," he said. "They have their headquarters here in Minnesota. They have interacted with this community for almost 20-plus years. They have a large percentage of Muslims who work for them. And Islamophobia has impacted Minnesota disproportionately for a number of years. We've had bombings. We have issues in the schools.

"It doesn't make any sense to me that Target sees this incident and tries to brush it off in light of all the things that have happened in Minnesota. I thought they'd have a stronger response," Hussein said.

I'm outraged! A public lashing is definitely in order for the 16 yr old barista and Target should be ordered to give her free coffee for the rest of her life. We must put an end to offensive thingies in this country.

A teenager thought it was appropriate to direct a racial slur at a customer. Apparently he/she was correct as his/her employer condoned it.

We're talking about a sixteen-year-old who was given what, to a non-Muslim anyway, is an uncommon name ... Aishah.  So a kid who isn't even out of high school yet misspells it.  And someone who is trained in the "I'm a victim" culture of today makes a fucking federal case out of it.

Frankly, where did this idea that someone needs to be addressed by their first name by a perfect stranger at a coffee stand ever come from?  If I want you to call me by my first name, *I* will be the one to tell you it's OK to do so; until then, refer to me as "sir" or "Mr. <last name>".

Next time, write "Arabic woman with <color of blouse or whatever> and <color of headscarf>" on the cup, and when the drink is ready, point to her and say "Here's your order".  That should solve it.

In fairness, Aishah and Isis sound nothing like each other. Say them out loud.

I have a somewhat common English last name and I have gotten in the habit of spelling it out.

ISIS?

There's a lot of that going around nowadays.

I'd like to know what the damages are that a $25.00 gift certificate and apology won't cover.

Since when can a present-day teenager spell anything correctly, let alone a "commonly known"(???) name like "Aishah"?

(BTW, Isis was an Egyptian goddess. And a Bob Dylan song.)

A 16 year old today is very likely not to know those last two facts.

Misspelling something that sounds like Aishah is one thing, but ISIS doesn’t sound like Aishah.

And I keep getting gut punched by the shit I have to read from folks on this board. The callousness toward BIPOC and the excuse making for racism is very fucking disheartening.

I am really annoyed by the whole concept of being asked my name when ordering my white chocolate mocha. I have taken to saying my name is "Bob" or "Cklem", with a silent K, and since there could be more than one Bob or Cklem in the store at a time it would make more sense to assign numbers to the order and call it when the order is ready.

Thanks, TPFKA@W.  At least there is one other voice of reason here instead a shrill klaxon ready to blare at the slightest hint of anything that might be even remotely offensive to someone or something.

I should have thought of the "pickup number XXX" too.  If it works at the deli counter at the store or the local Burger Thing, it should work at a Starsucks, too.

:ok Trying to get uneducated teenagers to spell everyone's name correctly seems to be a recipe for inadvertent offense and disaster.

What would you demand on Aishah’s behalf in order to correct the situation?

Didn't Bill Clinton have trouble with the meaning of ISIS?

And just howinthehell does one pronounce "Aishah"?  Just looking at it, I would presume it would be 'EYE-sha' (and Google backs me up on it), which isn't that far a stretch from 'EYE-sis' ... especially if one is a 16-year-old kid who is working in a noisy coffeeshop and probably paying more attention to getting the order correct than the name on the fuggin' cup.  And even if he had heard it correctly, would he have known to spell it with an 'Ai', or an 'Ay', or just gone with merely a simple capital 'I' ?  I'm sure I wouldn't have had a clue.

And as far as spelling names go, there is no such thing as one set spelling of a name any more anyway .... unless it's something like "Bob".  Look how many 'creative' ways people have come up with to spell what were once straight-forward names like Jennifer or Cynthia or Jasmine.

The 16 year old isn’t the one who should be fired. S/he should have been reprimanded.(assuming this was the first time). The supervisor should be shitcanned. Aishah and it’s variants while not common is not entirely uncommon either. One could simply ask how that’s spelled. Or butchering the spelling as most Starbucks do. It was a stupid prank not uncommon for the age group, but, should not have been condoned by supervision. It is that act in itself that raised this from a minor incident to yet another case of systematic racism.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

Aishah sounds like Isha, he may have just misspelled it

It's dollars to donuts the stupid adolescent did it on purpose. Not because of racist feelings (altho' that's possible) but because it's a stupid "joke" ha ha.

At that age stupid behavior is the norm but usually easily corrected. A write up and a stern talking to would have sufficed. The adult in the situation didn’t see it as a problem and blew the customer off. S/he is the one that needs to be fired.
