Right, so the whole NATO thing has been a mass delusion. M’kay.
NATO got off the ground in 1949. WW2 ended in 1945. I'm puzzled by your response to my comment.
I never used or raised the concept of altruism, but American concern for impacts of fascism and communism elsewhere on our own fortunes at home has existed since before WWII and continues to exist today, despite being entirely absent from the Trump administration. The rest of the world is concerned about things here, too. Maybe not every idiot, but I’m pretty sure a few billion give a shit.

So...when does it stop being funny and start becoming scary? Brits (and others) have got to think long and hard about the question: at what point does fascism make the transition from COMEDY to TRAGEDY???
Now that is a salient question. At present, Brits can do nothing but show their contempt for, and unbridled humour at, the US's absolute monstrosity of a President. There is not a single redeeming feature to the man. But, what can we do? We could cry at the stupidity of him, (and those who voted for him, and those who learned nothing from electing Chimpy Bush or the lunatic Reagan,) but we laugh at them.

To be frank, there's every chance that, this time, sanity may prevail, and he'll not get a second term. But putting ones eggs in the basket of trusting the American electorate's intelligence normally just ends up with broken eggs. so I'll not hold my breath until November.

Anyone taking my comment;
Oh, wrong there old son, we don't want him out of office, he's F-A-A-A-A-R-R-R-R too funny for us to want that to happen. We're just hoping his damage stays parochial. To be fair to the shitwitted moron, at least he hasn't started the traditional; "war against a small, far off, foreign country to get me re-elected", (yet.)
with any seriousness, (as our resident histrionic fruit loop seems to have,) is either on the level of humour/intelligence of a Trump voter, or has had a lobotomy.

I stand by my assertion that the American political system is stupid and fucked up beyond belief, though.

Maybe I spoke too soon?
President Donald Trump dropped an f-bomb on conservative Rush Limbaugh's radio show Friday during a two-hour talk-fest in which he was played off by music. 'If you f*** around with us, if you do something bad to us, we are going to do things to you that have never been done before,' Trump said in a burst of conversation about Iran.
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”

You have to realize that if he somehow does get another term in office (whether by election, deception, voter suppression, litigation, or whatever), he won't have to worry about re-election anymore, and it has already been demonstrated that he doesn't have to worry about impeachment, so basically he'll be able to do whatever the fuck he wants.

I heard on NPR yesterday that liberals refer to the National Guard as a militia and that the guard troops resent it. They should resent it; they put a lot of work into be professionals, and then liberal writers insult them by calling them amateurs. There is nothing wrong with being a militiaman, but they are not professionals, nor do they pretend to be.
I expected to be placed in an air force combat position such as security police, forward air control, pararescue or E.O.D. I would have liked dog handler. I had heard about the dog Nemo and was highly impressed. “SFB” is sad I didn’t end up in E.O.D.

You should visit the National Guard Website where it says, "December 13, 1636, thus marks the beginning of the organized militia, and the birth of the National Guard's oldest organized units is symbolic of the founding of all the state, territory, and District of Columbia militias that collectively make up today's National Guard."

That means nothing; the induction of militia units into the army is something that goes back to the beginning, but it changes nothing. A militiaman is not a soldier until he is inducted into the army. If I remember correctly, a quarter of George Washington’s army were recruited from militia units; they were treated no different than any other soldier except they served short term ninety 90 day enlistments.

Let me list just two differences between the militia and the army: A militiaman is a civilian and the soldier is not. Militia elects or selects their own officers and army units don’t. Have you ever heard of democratic ARMY UNIT? There is no such thing.

Your claim was that is was somehow wrong to refer to National Guard members as militia and that they allegedly resented it. Joe has proven this to be bullshit, as the National Guard refers to itself as militia.

Okay in fairness (and I hail from a conservative military family and have spent much of my life amongst such people), National guardsmen call themselves ‘[state] national guard’ or ‘army National guard’, they don’t typically use the word militia to label themselves. At least not in my anecdotal experience.

When I hear militia I immediately think of antigovernment radicals in the wilds of Michigan, Montana, Idaho, and oh sadly everywhere else.

Speaking of which did anyone else see the report about Germany finding 1400 instances of right wing extremist actions by police, military and intelligence officials in just a three year period? It was in NYT but other news outlets too this past week.

We have the same issue with white supremacists infiltrating our own police military and security forces. The dangers inherent in continuing to tolerate it should be plain to all.
