Methuselah is back

Post by Methuselah »

I just had my 84th birthday so it is time to join this board. I have been lurking around watching it for several years. I was a member of an earlier version of this board for many years but got booted for not playing well with Raythom. Since he is gone now, I hope that is not an issue anymore. Another motivation to join is that the present members seem to be dying off at a regular rate, so you should consider recruiting others. There are some existing members of the prior site I would like to chat with again. I have run into Andrew Howarth, Smitty, Stump, and other old friends on other websites, so If you would like me to invite them, I will do so, and any others I stumble across.

Several years ago I was riding a bike into the sun, with my head down to avoid the glare. I ran into a car parked near my home and cartwheeled over the handlebars to land in the street like a bag of bricks. My femur (large bone in upper left leg) was broken and had to be fixed with a pin. I was in a rehab hospital for several weeks and never really recovered. I now walk slowly, with a limp. It effectively aged me 10 years overnight.
I saw Joe Biden ride a bike recently, on TV. Joe, stay off the bike. Find another way to exercise that is more forgiving of errors.

Hi Methuselah! Nice to see you again and welcome back. I don't recall any dust-up between you and RayThom but if there was any bad blood he's not really in a position to object. I certainly wouldn't mind having a few old friends come around here; AndyH knows where we are and used to be a regular but he dropped off some time ago. He and M seem to be getting along fine without us, though.

Hi SueU, RayT and I used to snipe at each other, but I happened to mention the late Tess in one of the posts, so that was the unforgivable sin. She was in the process of a slow, painful death, and was Tessty (bad pun). I support the concept of not saying bad things about the dead, so I won't mention her or Raythom again.

I must be badly informed, I thought Smitty was the husband of Tess. I am morally unable to post anything bad about Tess. Six years ago she did something incredibly nice and completely unexpected when I was in a bad hole.

Hope you can persuade some of those to check in here. I am glad to see you again. I am 81 years old and living alone. (My daughter is in town here, but socially distancing for very good survival reasons.)

I thought Smitty WAS Tess. As in "Teresa Smith".

You're correct. I remember her post when she changed from Smitty to Tess. I don't remember when it was but it was a long time ago, obviously.

IIRC, she originally used the name "Smitty" on Car Talk/Cafe Dartre. I don't recall her husband (Doug?) ever posting on either board.

My late and much lamented wife informed me that little old ladies are privelidged to be nasty to any and every one, based on the many years they have had to be nice to ignorant and incompetent males.

So I claim priviledge of growing senility for having forgotten Doug.

I really want to hear from "Slanter" on how it finally worked out, shoe-horning a V-8 into a Pontiac Fiero.

Not to impugn your wife BP, but in my experience, most nasty old ladies were nasty young ladies (and even nasty teens and young girls); sure some mya be bitter and have gotten that way, but for most that I have known, their basic personality has been pretty constant.

I don’t think snailgate’s wife was talking about women with a nasty personality, I think she meant the shortening of patience and the willingness to speak plainly that many women embrace in the change of life and into their older and elder years. I’ve seen that in dozens and dozens of women personally and it’s a trope that stands for many generations so I’m pretty sure she’s spot on.

My 90+ grandma was an eternal sunny optimist, but she’d tell you what for after having endured two husbands and a lifetime of sexism.

What Mrs. snailgate was referring to was the shocking habit of older women to put honesty ahead of politeness; this is a habit that many men engage in from childhood on without a second thought, but we women are so socially conditioned to be nice, to smile, to bite our tongues and stroke egos that it’s shocking and ‘nasty’ when women do it. Women of all ages come up against that their entire lives, pretty much. We just had a President calling us nasty for simply speaking our minds.

Just the same way we nice old men can get away with grinning at good-looking young 'un and say "Gee honey. You're an awful cute one, yessir, no doubt about it"

That would fall into the category of “based on the many years they have had to be nice to ignorant and incompetent males” referenced above.
