I am completely goyisha--but what is the pastry on the plate called--they look to me toe be exactly like a "Berliner" Famous for JFK's declaration to be a jelly donut.

They are in fact jelly donuts, but we call them "sufganiyot."

OK, that was delightful! We had our annual family Hanukkah party tonight, by way of Zoom. Not quite the same, but we didn't have to schlep up to Brooklyn.

I thought you were from Philly; I didn't realize you had relatives in my old stomping grounds, "the cultural hub of the univoise."

What part of Brooklyn?

I'm from Camden (now, Cherry Hill) but I've got a brother in Midwood and nephews, nieces and cousins in Park Slope, Flatbush, Williamsburg and whatever they call that neighborhood right where the Prospect Expressway dumps into Ocean Parkway off of the BQE. Another nephew and a couple of cousins kids have defected to Manhattan.

I was from Bay Ridge, not too far from Flatbush or Prospect Park; I'm not sure about the name of the Ocean Parkway neighborhood you mentioned, but it might be Gravesend (it's been a while since I knew most of the neighborhoods).

From Google Maps, it looks like it's the intersection of Windsor Terrace, Kensington, and Prospect Park South. (Frankly, I had never heard of either "Windsor Terrace" or "Kensington" before I looked at the map just now.) The Brooklyn neighborhood that has always fascinated me is Sunset Park, right next to Bay Ridge. Reasonably close to everything but its own little pocket of the city. If I were to move to Brooklyn, I think I'd start looking around there. (A lot of it looks very much like the Philadelphia neighborhoods I lived in for many years.)

Sunset Park is where my dad was from, and my grandmother lived there until she was over 100. It's changed a lot over the years, but is on a pretty good upswing right now; I've always liked it.

FWIW, a a number of years ago I had a job to sing at a church in my old neighborhood and it was the first time I had been there in years; I wa pleasantly surprised to see that it has become a multicultural area with many good ethnic restaurants of various types and has held up pretty well. But what I could not believe was the value of the house I grew up in; it was a 2/3 family (we used it as a 3 family) house with a front stoop and a front and back yard (small, but then this was the city) that my grandmother (my mother's mother, not the Sunset Park one) owned. The new owner converted to a three floor single family home and upgraded it (wood floors, etc.); it was listed for $1.3 million (if my grandmother had only kept it) . It seems a lot of the homes that were multi family have now become single family. The parks are well kept and clean and stores are in walking distance. The only pain in the ass is parking, but if you don't need a car, it's pretty nice.
