No bodies have been reported over here on the west coast. At least not dead tsunami bodies.

So far there has only been voluntary evacuations and more people are headed toward the coast to watch than going away from it.

They did close the Great Highway over near Lord Jim's estate. He's probably got his servants sand-bagging his castle even though he's much too high up for any water to reach.

I'm going surfing later today down at Half Moon Bay.

We're about a dozen blocks from the ocean, and on top of that, at our end of Ocean Beach, (near Sloat Blvd. and the zoo, for those familiar with the area) the beach level is about 30 feet below Great Highway and the closest houses. (there is a ridge of continuous dunes that slope down that people walk down to get to the beach level)

It could conceivably be a little hairier for folks right near the ocean at the other end of Ocean Beach, (near Lincoln Ave. and The Beach Chalet) where the highway is only maybe five feet above sea level, but at that end the beach itself is much wider.

I certainly don't mean to minimize or trivialize the great tragedy this has been for Japan....

The death toll currently stands at over 1000... and it is certain to go higher...(primarily from the tsunami; while there is no country on the planet better equipped and prepared to deal with a major earth quake than Japan, but there's a limit to how prepared any country can be for a tsunami that breaks on shore with 15 minutes warning from a shallow 8.9 earth quake)

But as far as Northern California has been concerned, this has been the most impressive display since Comet Kohoutek....

As well informed as the folks around here are, it's probably a mistake to rely on this website as a conduit for information as to what's going on in the world....

Japan had a 7.0 earthquake a couple of days ago. Yesterday there was an 8.9 earthquake. Today there was a 7.1 earthquake that had a different epicenter than yesterday's big one.

I predict a volcano will soon erupt there.

These events are undoubtedly the result of a U.S. government cover up.

Sure... the earthquake caused the tsunami...

You don't expect us conceptual thinkers to believe that, do you?

Looks very bad in Japan. Not much but property damage on our coast, and little of that. But there are always the Darwin competitors:
Outside Brookings, Ore., just north of the California border, four people went to a beach to watch the waves and were swept into the sea. Two got out on their own, and the others were rescued, authorities said.

In Crescent City, Calif., miles to the south, the Coast Guard searched for a man who was swept out to sea. He was taking photos near the mouth of the Klamath River. Two people with him jumped in to rescue him. They were able to get back to land, authorities said.

We're getting together with our USGS friends for drinks after dinner, as we do most Friday's.

There will be some very sharp questioning about why they aren't doing more to put a stop to this kind of thing.

Very sharp. Pointed.

Well Gen'l, I am not a good Christian by any means, but I have to say I am somewhat offended when you refer to "The Roman Church" (The One True Faith) as some sort of "cult"...

No better than Mormons... :(

In the gene pool cleansing department:
Tsunami waves kill one in California

(AFP) – 5 hours ago

SAN FRANCISCO — Tsunami waves from Japan's huge earthquake have killed at least one person in the United States, officials said.

A 25-year-old man was confirmed dead in California's Del Norte County after being swept into the Pacific Ocean near the mouth of the Klamath River Friday, according to local emergency officials.

The man and two friends were taking photographs of the incoming tsunami waves.

Frankly, I was a bit concerned, living in a flood plane, but fortunately for us South Bayans, these waves came at a time of low tide. Image
