...particularly for those of us who were beginning to learn weights and measures on the cusp of the introduction of the metric system.

I think the real question is how accurate do you need to be, and for most practical purposes it's "not very." 500 g =1 lb, 250 ml = 1 cup, 10 k = 6 mi are all close enough for me. Temperature is the only one that really stumps me, so for Celsius I just consider anything between 20 and 30 "reasonably comfortable" and anything 0 or below "will definitely require a coat."

Here in our South African voitures, we still measure kilometers traveled on a device known to so many as a "milometer".

Kilometermeter just doesn't work

What do you do with the 'odometer" I have always wondered what is an odo. Klick and Klack explained the source for Naugade, but I don't recall any information on odos

The Greek root of the odo- bit is ὁδός - hodos - which roughly translates to road or path both as a literal thing and a figurative as in the way or means to achieve some objective. One word also ultimately also deriving from ὁδός is 'method' - really a 'meta' or transcending path.
