Boss or Ref? Managers Waste Time on Employee Disputes
March 15, 2011 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - A new survey finds managers are spending unnecessary time resolving conflicts between coworkers.
Managers interviewed by Accountemps said they spend, on average, 18% of their time -- more than seven hours a week or nine weeks per year -- intervening in employee disputes. Accountemps said studies from as far back as 1991 show similar results.
"Although staff management is part of the job for supervisors, too much time spent handling disputes gets in the way of business priorities and often signals a larger issue needs to be addressed," said Max Messmer, chairman of Accountemps, in a press release. "For example, being chronically short-staffed can cause friction among employees, as can an overly competitive work environment."
The survey was conducted by an independent research firm and is based on telephone interviews with more than 1,000 senior managers at companies with 20 or more employees.

People with bad attitudes and crappy outlooks will always have bad attitudes and crappy outlooks despite the difficulty in obtaining the job in the first place.
Good bosses can help, but bad attitudes will remain.

Most of the disputes in our workplace are CAUSED by management, not sorted out by them.
Maybe if managers stopped interfering and allowed people to get on with the jobs they are paid for, then natural attrition would resolve the workplace staffing.

I can't remember not getting along with co-workers, at least tot eh point of having to go to my manager about it. While I may have thought some were assholes and some didn't work hard enough, I got along as well as possible so I could do my job.
but then again, I get along with just about everybody

No, I've never disliked a co-worker so much, I called the manger on him/her. I have had a manager I disliked so much, I quit, but that's different.
